Trying to date this one, at first I thought that was a smudge on the back of the pen blade but now I think it might be a tang stamp, albeit a poorly struck one. Any help here?

It's definitely a stamp...I can make out the Q with the crown but not the rest of it. I own several Queen knives that have the same issue...the tang stamp is corroded but nothing else. I had always just assumed it was due to poor post-production polishing that didn't penetrate into the tang stamp, but I really don't know.

Cool looking knife though, despite that one little "smudge."

I think it could be this Queen stamp from Goin's encyclopedia.

Neither of mine have any marking on the smaller pen blade, main blade on darker brown one is stamped '76, reddish one just has pat. pend #'s, like yours....I always assumed that was the older of the 2, but, IDK....

Please see the attached Queen Tang Stamp page and the enlargement. 1973 – 1975 I believe.

David, as long as you're here, let me go off topic for a moment. Do you happen to have a complete chart of the S&M pattern numbers and definitions for all the fields.

Such as 043 176
04 = handle material (bone)
3 = number of blades (3)
1 = main blade profile (clip)
76 = pattern number

For handle materials, I have:
03 Stag
04 Bone
05 White Pearl / Abalone
06 Winterbottom Bone
07
08
09
10
11
12 Wooly Mammoth
13
14 Buffalo Horn
15 Black Lip Pearl

And for main blade profiles, I have:
0 Wharncliffe
1 Clip
2 Spear
3 Razor
4 Sheepfoot
5
6
7
8 Saber Ground Clip

But that's all. Sure would like to have a chart with everything on it.

I really can't help with the new S&M numbers. Someone at the factory will have to provide the key. Try Ashley Nottingham - anottingham@queencutlery.com. She may be able to help with a key.

The Schatt & Morgan key would be very nice to have. Jerry D keep plugging on that!

Re the 22 barlow, my eyes cannot distinguish the tang stamp well enough to see if it the one David Clark suggested (73-75), or the earlier one that looks very similar from '58-60. I am inclined to agree with David Clark on the70s. since I have seen many from that period with the same kind of "smudge" damage on the tang stamp - more common than not. And knife from the early 60s would most likely look like it had more wear. Ever see sawcut delrin from the 58-60 period? The only 22 I own (1992) has identical darker brown delrin. Early barlows may show patent pending, not the actual patent number.

Fred Fisher has helped me to appreciate these aluminum frame knives - innovative, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, but very durable in hard use situations -like their cousin, the big chief.
