All About Pocket Knives

Here's my spin on a Green River Camp Knife. The handles are made from a Cyprus tree slab out the swamps of Louisiana sent to me by a friend.

Gary, I like that one a lot.

Edit: The blade profile gives a slight nod to the Russell Canadian Belt Knife and the Nessmuk look. I guess that's what draws my attention.

I don't think I have ever worked with cypress before.
It looks nice, how is it to work with? How hard is it?
I like the grind along the top edge, is it sharp or is that a false edge?

Thanks for the guys! Of the blades I've made, this pattern has to be one of my favorites. Very functional around camp or home, great skinner, and Jerry it will slice tomatoes like a Ginsu.

Dale, This particular piece of Cypress is soft and as you can imagine pretty easy to work. Bobby told me it's from a two thousand year old stump that's been submerged in the swamps of LA for decades. He drug it out sliced it up and had some stabilized, it's got the coolest tints to it! It smells swampy when you sand it, literally!
The spine is a false edge and that hump (for lack of technical term) allows you to run it down the leg of an animal without it hanging up or digging in while skinning.



Question........That blade finish is 220 grit, do you think I should take it down finer? I like the look myself but perhaps I should mix it some and take a few down to 400. I don't care for a mirror finish myself.

This is a Grohmann Mini-Russell Lockback that has the blade profile I'm talking about. My knife but not my picture. This is a Ka-Bar 5602 Gamestalker whose blade sorta has that profile. This is a Grohmann Canadian Belt Knife. Not my knife or picture. And this picture has a variety of takes on the Nessmuck type blade.

Hey thanks Jerry! A lot to consider there............some pretty good patterns.

In the last picture the third knife from the bottom, I have one on the drawing board very similar to it. It could get cut out next week....we'll see!
