Read an interview with the photographer whose shark photo was used in this hoax, and see his more of his shark images:

A photograph that has been circulating on the internet showing a shark leaping out of the water to attack a helicopter, is a fake. The composite image, which claims to be National Geographic's "Photo of the Year," was spliced together from a U.S. Air Force photo taken near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and a photo of a shark from South Africa.

The photo of a breaching great white shark was taken by South African photographer Charles Maxwell [see the link to his Web site at the bottom of this page]. The Air Force photo of an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter was taken by Lance Cheung. They were spliced together by an unknown person, and reportedly began making the rounds on e-mail in August 2001.

"I'd like to make contact with the person who did this—not to get him or her into trouble, but because it's a lot of fun and it is a good job," Maxwell said. "However, I must make clear that I would not like to see this happen to one of my photographs again. It is wrong to take images from a Web site without permission." Maxwell said he has sold quite a few photographs as a result of the attention the hoax has drawn to his work.

The e-mail containing the hoax photo says:

AND YOU THINK YOUR [sic] HAVING A BAD DAY AT WORK !!

Although this looks like a picture taken from a Hollywood movie, it is in fact a real photo, taken near the South African coast during a military exercise by the British Navy.

It has been nominated by National Geographic as "THE photo of the year".

Other versions of the e-mail credit it to Geo, a German periodical similar to National Geographic magazine.

Nationalgeographic.com has received hundreds of visits each day due to this photo since the latest round of the e-mail began. These visitors can be identified by their searches for such strings as "photo of the year" and "shark helicopter." E-mail inboxes have also been deluged with inquires about the photo.

Sharks jump out of the water—a behavior known as "breaching"—when they hunt seals. The shark uses an explosive surprise attack to snatch the seal before it can swim away, resulting in the shark throwing itself into the air.

Maxwell took his photo at False Bay, South Africa. Though False Bay is perhaps the best place to see sharks feeding on seals, he said, it is difficult to get to. "Anyone wanting to hire a boat to see this amazing spectacle must work through the only registered white shark operators in False Bay, Chris Fallows and Rob Lawrence of African Shark Encounters."

helicopter to make it work.

Cool pictures! But I doubt that shark piture is real. The land and bridge structure is that of the Golden Gate Bridge, been through that scenery dozens of times on Salmon fishing trips and know it well. Certain times of the year you will find Great White Sharks on the Farallon Islands, 26 to 28 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge. That would be the west end of the Red Triangle. Bodega Bay is north end and Monterey is the south end. It's called that because it is considered the largest or one of the largest concentrations of Great Whites in the world, depending on your reference source. YES, I have seen all the Great Whites I care to see while I was in the water. You don't usually find them inside the bridge, their food source (seals - Harbor and sea lions - Caifornia, Stellars, and Elephant) lives out on the rocks.

Like the photo anyway.

EDIT: Well Mitch beat me to it, Great Whites are known to leap out of the of the water in S. Africa to attack and eat seal pups.

Despite their deadly reputation, they are successful only about 10% of the time.

Back to the shark, in 2004 Randy Fry was killed by a Great White near Fort Bragg, Ca. He was a renowed fly tyer and fly fisherman and I think he lived near Auburn, Ca. As Randy made his freedive a Great White was coming up to attack. As Randy Fry dove, his head went into the sharks mouth. The shark bit his head off. They found his body and his head a few dayys after that. Here is a link that tells the story better than I and it's by his dive partner.

Great Whites are an inshore species because their primary prey are seals and sealions which live along the shore.

Great White attacks have occurred in as little as 3 ft of water.

This is a sad but true story, I have dove that area many times, usually solo.

I still like it, as I've mentioned before, I've seen enough of them, like them better when I'm not in the water though.
Yeah, it looks bigger than JAWS. Biggest I've seen is about 18 ft, I think. The have a picture of it in Bodega Bay.
They caught it in a net nearby where I was diving, about 1/4 mile away. Sheesh , that must of been at least a couple decades ago.

Yeah, nobody is going to outswim one, no matter how fast they swim.

Are you sure that's not a dolphin in the waves, wrong shape for a shark. Look at the tail, it's flat, off 90 degrees for a shark and the dorsal fin. Also, look at the nose. I've seen more shark while diving than I care to think about, much less the ones I didn't see. I swam with some spinner dolphins in Maui, they are a kick. They always seem to have fun, curious and mischevious. Dang, I want to get in the water!
