All About Pocket Knives

My niece, who is also my god-daughter, just turned 16. Since this is a "special" birthday, I wanted to make something for her. She's not a really "girly" girl, she enjoys snowmobiling and other oudoor activities with her dad, so it's not much a stretch that she might be able to use a knife.

Still, I didn't want to give her some huge stockman or something like that, so I chose a Case Peanut. I had this orange SS model, I thought it would make a good donor knife.


I took the knife apart and put some ruby red smooth bone on it. I took the Case shield and ground it smooth so I could have her intitials engraved on it.

I got the knife all together, hafted and polished, then took it to get it engraved. When I went to pick it up, I just about threw up. They had engraved the shield, but upside down. That is, the letters were right side up when the knife blades were facing down. I know I have seen shields that I consider "upside down", but that is not how I wanted this to look. So, I took the knife apart, drilled a hole in the back side of the liner, and was able to pop out the shield and turn it around. I got the knife back together, again, and got it finished.



Not how I imagined the build would go, but I was happy with the outcome.

Looks great now Glenn. I can imagine how you felt when you saw the upside down engraving. Great save on your part. I think she's going to like it.

Absolutely great gift for a 16 year old girl - very nice example of your work too! I gifted my niece's Case pen knives when they graduated from HS - everyone of them was thrilled - I'm sure your niece will be too. OH
