They made 'scrimshaw' on Delrin versions of regular Old Timer patterns, and when they did so they re-numbered them, so 51OT became 504SC, orSC504. The micarta version here would normally been done up in Delrin, I believe. This one with the whitetails is probably end-of-days, from leftover handles in the American Express series, which featured American presidents and micarta. That run was the ONLY time they used micarta. Some were also seeded out with no scrim on the handles but with a president etch on the blade. It is not clear to me whether any of the 51OTs were non-stainless or not; I know that some of them did not have the 'plus' sign on the tang stamp. In fact, I have one that did not even have the pattern number on the tang stamp.

I have not seen a 51OT that was not stainless.
I have a 51OT with the blade etch that says "MADE FOR THE COLLECTOR." I just tested it using a bluing touchup pen and it would not blue the blade, indicating to me that the blade is stainless steel and not carbon steel. It is my understanding that the first of a new pattern were the only ones with that etch.
It would seem logical to me that if any knives were made with carbon steel, it is probably the earlier production and not the later ones.

So, using that line of reasoning, I doubt any 51OTs were made with carbon steel blades, BUT Schrade did a lot of things that were not logical!
If someone finds some 51OTs with carbon steel blades then we will know for sure; until then I will think they were most likely all stainless.

Good info, Dale! Would you mind posting the name of the bluing touch-up pen? I need one of those.

The one I have is made by Birchwood Casey. I think you can get them at Walmart or most gun stores.
