All About Pocket Knives

Here's a custom folder by one of my dear friends, Vernon Hicks, from Bauxite, Ark. Vernon was featured in several of the "Knives" annuals and the early "Gun Digest Book of Knives".

He was a wormy little runt, with a pipe semi-permanently attached to his teeth. Nobody loved knives more than Vernon - his shop was bigger than his house - and usually cleaner !

Vernon died in '93, of grinders consumption - he just would NOT put on a mask. (If you're making knives, please note*)

Great looking knife and stag. Yeah, I wear a cartridge respirator when grinding metal, some natural woods, abalone, stabilized mammoth tooth and ivory, and all stabilized woods. I change the cartridges for some chemicals that I use.
But, I sure don't like it. They just don't fit well with glasses.

Anyone know of a good one with cartridges that works well with glasses? I may have to go with a full face shield to get around that. The full face shield is OK in the winter, a mite warm in the summer.

Bravo for you, Hukk ! Yessir, I know the respirator is uncomfortable - but if you'd ever slept with my ex-wife, after a supper that included cabbage and beans - you'd learn to sleep with the durn thing on !

I haven't found anything yet that'll keep the sweat off my glasses in summertime, bud. I would just hafta work slower, and wipe sweat more often. A cold, wet rag applied every 5 or 10 minutes helps. What I used to do : I'd put a few ice cubes and a little water in a ziploc bag. Take that to the shop with you, and that way the grinding dust doesn't get in your cool water. Maybe, hopefully, my new shop will be a wee bit cooler - it's in the basement of ex-wife's house.
