All About Pocket Knives

Came across this two blade folding hunter today on Ebay.

That looks like Winterbottom bone to me and if that is the case, I assume that's a desirable knife.

Maybe it's overpriced at $120.00. I don't know enough about Queen to say.

I don't think my knife is worth that much. That's a lot of money for a fairly common knife.
Even in fine condition as mine appears to be.
My knife has one issue. The main blade has a slight wobble which was disappointing to find in an unused, unsharpened knife. I'm still glad to have it.

Most of my knives seem to have an issue of one kind or another.

That is a fine lookin' #39! I've got 2 of them but neither are real winterbottom bone as that one appears to be. They are a great knife for deer cleanin', but that one with the bone handle, would have to stay a "safe Queen".

I'm with you Tommy. From the first time I saw it, I've never been a Winterbottom fan. Not a judgment, just an observation.

I don't like all Winterbottom bone, but that that looks like the Ebay knife and Joe's knife, I do like. When I was a boy and "collecting knives", I was given a 5 1/4" Queen single blade coke bottle folding hunter with beautiful Winterbottom handles. That knife was traded for a Robeson long ago, but I still like that handle material if it has a similar character.

I really dislike the synthetic form Queen used later.

The Ebay knife has harversian canals, i.e. old blood vessel passageways. Synthetic Winterbottom did not even attempt to duplicate that.

When did Queen stop using the real stuff?

And what is the value of a genuine bone handled 5 1/4" two blade folding hunter in near mint condition from any American manufacturer that probably dates to the 1950's, 1960's?

Yes, a very nice knife. Learn something everyday - bone pores as "Haversian canals" Yep. Never seen them on the delrin. I cannot see the tang stamp too well - I think it is the early to mid 1950s and before they went (like the rest of the knife industry) to delrin. It is my understanding that the conversion to plastic took a long time -they used up existing bone inventory before shifting to the delrin, and some of the larger frame knives sell a bit slower and the bone stocks lasted well into the 1960s. After '61 bone handles can be found with no tang stamp.

As for what its worth, that depends on the buyer's need. Before I'd pay 120 I'd want the sheath and no scratches/cracks...

I believe I see 1972 on the tang, I don't think its called winterbottom at that date period, but I'm no expert at all when it comes to what anybody calls it . Its a real purdy knife but it ain't worth it to me, although I'd like to have it.
