I am somewhat familiar with the 70s 172UH Bear Skinner and the 172UH Wildcat of the early 90's, but until now I had not heard of the 172 S. Does anyone know when it was manufactured?

CRC88,

I found a 172UH listed on a Schrade Walden Price list from 1971.

Here are photos of my Schrade Walden 172UH. The box is marked on the end No. 172 S but the knife is stamped 172UH ::shrug::

Hope this helps,
Keith

Thanks for your response. That would seem to date it to the early seventies or perhhaps even earlier.

That knife appeared in the Schrade catalogs in 1971, 1972 and 1973. The "S" on the box stood for STAGLON Delrin handles. When the handles were of stacked leather on one of their fixed blade knives, you might see the letter "L."
