All About Pocket Knives

I have an early Schrade. I can't seem to date it or recognize the stamp on G Schrade. I know he was developing this knife in the early part of the 20th century. Does anyone know what is under G Schrade? Also around what years? The blade has a chip right where the middle pin was place...intentional ?? Is it a prototype?

Thank you. So does this knife date to WW1 era?

What is the closed length ? If it's 4" closed its very possible the prototype official scout , very rare and I believe they date around late 1930s .

Gotta thing with the tang stamp and "Pat Pend-g" it has to be early. I will keep searching.

Found this;
B K Brooks on Ebay states "PRESTO over PAT. PEND-G on one side and G.SCHRADE over B'PORT,CT on the other. Please note there are two types on was early with a smaller stamp and the more common is a large stamp."

I have not idea as what this one is, they seem to both to be rare.

Not WW I era, much later. Mid to late 1930s I'd say. The ones that have a patent date say "Jan 30-40", so I would expect that it was pending much before that.
The bail on yours may make it an early paratrooper/GI model.
Looks like somebody sat on it and chipped the blade, too bad.

Great Find riverdive! Wornout has it correct, late 1930s, likely 39' before the patent was granted in 40'. That would have been the model issued to U.S. W.W.II paratroopers.They also made it with metal and plastic handles. I look forward to hearing from others, possibly Wiseguy will chime in.

Thanks for the input. I read that these, pat pend-g with B port ct were distributed to the Airborne first and then with the Walden stamp. Eventually the bail was taken off. I guess it wasn't too popular. My Dad was 82nd with the 505 as a pathfinder in the European Theater...unfortunately, I didn't get any knives from him... just some great memories of a Patriot.

Here are some more photos. Anyone know if the small cutout on the tang is unique to this design? The knife is 4.125" closed, 2 15/16" blade. Very tight in all areas and has a smooth quick snap opening.

Wornoutwrench, your right, the trooper must have smacked into a tree branch when landing. It is exactly on the pin and springs end. They would carry these in a special pocket on the chest area of their jump jacket.

Any idea as to how the chip affects the value?

Was the chip in the blade made by closing the blade onto the bail?

Stockman, Your probably right. I placed tape on the side of the blade following the blades contour and closed it added some flexing pressure and it looked fine when opened. There is no damage on the bail and it is still tight...must have taken a good shot to break it like that.

I have a PRESTO/Made in USA stamped on the mark side, Geo. Schrade/Bridgeport/ Conn. stamped on the pile side.
4 1/8" closed. Iron bolsters and iron bail full blade no sign of etch. I was told it was a possible Scout knife, maybe

I have owned and have handled a few of the official Presto scouts , the etch on these were done very light .
With an etched blade I have seen them sell for 1700+.
Theirs a lot of meat left on that blade so IMO it would help the value greatly by removing a little to get that chip out .

That's a very nice example stockman , I am by far not an authority on these but when I see these in the smaller 4" frame with the bail and bone handles theirs always a good possibility of it being an official scout proto type
