Found a Nice SCHRADE WALDEN NY
marked 881 Style Stockman all three blades are marked.
I had one previously in rougher shape but I bought a much nicer one.
What do you all think?

Interesting to see both clip blades. In the 2nd pic. top knife shows a greater curve of the edge at the very tip showing that it has been re-profiled and therefore is slightly short. If you did not have the lower knife for comparison the re-profiling would be less apparent.
Schrade Walden with all blades marked is i believe an early Schrade Walden, i.e. closer to 1946 than 1972.

Seems to me the 881 is about the same knife as the 8OT. Both big sturdy stockmans.

Yes 881 is the same frame as the 8OT. Old Timer line began in 1958-59 but i think the 881 was not discontinued until the 1970's ?

The 881 was listed in the Schrade catalogs until 1986.

They are BIG STURDY STOCKMAN style knives that's for sure.

The 8OT and 881 were almost identical. The only difference was in the Delrin handles, the 8OT having sawcut and the 881 jigged Delrin.
Yet for 28 years both were made (1958-1986).
The 8OT was i believe the second biggest seller for Schrade after the 34OT. So the 8OT must have out sold the 881 by many multiples.
Why did Schrade continue with the 881 for so long after the introduction of the 8OT ?
Perhaps because the expense to produce both was no more than to just make one (the 8OT) ?

I try to keep an eye out for pre-OT/881 stockemen, but they are not exactly common in any condition

A "pre OT" 881 would mean a knife from earlier than 1958. A Schrade-Walden 881 could date from 1947-1972 but i don't know how to date if from before or after 1958.
But perhaps i am not correctly understanding your post ?

It has a pattern number on back master tang so it is a Schrade-Walden (' 47-' 72). I believe it is correct that the early S-W had no pattern numbers, so this is a 'later' S-W. Also i cannot be sure from these pics if handle is bone or Delrin. If D. then it is from after 1960.
tongueriver knows how to tell early from late S-W. Hope he chimes in.

I've got a reserved spot in my Shrade stockman display for early a good example of an early 881 (maybe bone, SW era) to go along with my later production open stock 881, and my founders edition stainless 881. Or, you know, pre- OT/881 knives like the old Cut-Co bone stockmen, which were the spiritual predecessors to everything in my display. There's a pseudo method to my madness sometimes

Thanks I always saw the 881 as a step up from the 8OT and the Uncle Henry full sized Stockman.

That OP knife is a beauty. I may be a little late to this thread but I was looking for a place to put this Schrade Walden bone 881 for Craftsman. It is in the mail (I hope!). It will find a good home here. I believe the matchstrike pull and the wavy jigging places it as late 1950s.

Beauty knife, with bone handles, not often seen, esp. in this condition and even etch looks all there.
The Craftsman knives always seem to be some of the best made by Schrade & Camillus.

I don't think I've put these here yet Best pattern anyone ever made.

Really beautiful knives, Paul; just great. They sure did change from the 1950s to the 1990s.
