All About Pocket Knives

I've been looking for one of these for about a year and a half. An A.G. Russell 1861 Bowie made by Schrade in 2003 with a Presentation Iron Wood handle. 13-1/4" overall with an 8-1/4" blade, nickel silver guard and brass spacers. The first ones off the line had Maple Burl handles but Schrade ran out and switched to the Iron Wood. She looks pretty good with the other Schrade Bowies, of which 9 have been worked on by Herman Williams, along with 2 of the 275 Clasp knives, the LB-7 and both Sharpfingers.

Thanks for showing a great display, Doug. I have never heard of the the knife in question. Were there any flyers to look at or any other information that I could learn more about this release?

I googled Russell 1861 bowie and found just about what I posted. From what I found, it was in the 2003 Schrade catalog and released around Christmas. Unfortunately Schrades R-us is missing the 2003 catalog. Perhaps someone here will have a copy. Most of the pictures I've found show 2003 on the pile side of the tang but this one doesn't. Not sure of the significance of that. Russell also released one that was a couple inches shorter...made in Tiwan I believe...also with micarta handles...one was sold from an AAPK store around 2013. Scarce 2003 A.G. Russell 2003 1861 Pattern Bowie that was made in the USA back then. Russell offered the knife later but went to Taiwan for its' production. The Taiwan model costs $100.00 less, $199.00 vs. $299.00 for this USA version, but is not as well executed. This knife is mint. Russell fashioned this beauty after an early 1835-1865 Bowie knife he once saw. He had this knife made using high-tech methods. They laser cut the blade to shape, heat-treated it in computer controlled furnaces, then double disc ground the blade to a precise thickness. The major bevels are CNC ground and then the blade was finished by Hand. The 8 1/4" blade of 440C is hardened to 58-60Rc. Beautifully executed!! A double guard of nickel silver is soldered in place and the of Ebony Rucarta is securely epoxied
