I really need to get some of his knives into my collection....where to start though....

Is the handle material on the 152OT & the 51OT real abalone or a composite?

He did an excellent job of reprofiling the 51OT blade to make it look it left the factory as a clip blade instead of a drop point blade that was changed into a clip blade. The change in the blade alone is an incredible transformation to that knife. If Schrade had offered the 51OT as a clip blade, I think it would have been much more popular!

Dale, the handles are made from thin veneer sheets of real Abalone sandwiched between two pieces of clear acrylic. When the handles are looked at from the top or bottom they appear to be as clear as glass. The handles retain the same iridescence of "real" abalone at a much more affordable cost and the material is much easier to work...no toxic fumes when shaping or buffing. I don't have much knowledge of abalone but I doubt that a piece large enough for a 51OT could be found. A set of blanks 5" x 1.75" x .25" run about $30 shipped.

You are right, I do have a very good friendship with Herman and consider myself very fortunate to be able to say that. He is the type of man that makes a person want to be better that they were before meeting him.
