All About Pocket Knives

Picked up this Case Bros Little Valley knife the other day. Appears to me to be rehandled. I couldn't find a pattern number. Measures 3 1/4 inches long. Does anyone know the pattern number? Thank you!

Can't help you with the model number, but that sure is a nice old knife.

While we're waiting for the experts to weigh in, let me just add to that and say that is a very nice knife.

Looks to be an 06230 although the guides list it as 3 3/8" closed. I , as well as a lot of experts, have never seen a Case Bros knife with a pattern number stamped.

Thanks guys. This one does have pittIng as you can see in the photos, but I was glad to get it. The rehandle job is pretty good, but I would have personally sought out some pocket worn bone to use. Oh, by the way, it does measure 3 and 3/8 inches.

Appears to be a 78 pattern. Case Bros listed it in a variety of handle materials.

Steve is of course right on the pattern number. I really didn't notice it was a sleeve board when I looked at the pictures.

Is the general consensus that this has indeed been rehandled?

My opinion is rehandled. The only wood I have seen on old case knives is ebony - and ebony is very rare to find on old case knives.

My vote is rehandled as well for the same reasons Jerry alluded to.

Believe it or not, these scales are not wood. I am almost certain they are smooth bone.

I thought they might be old stag handles that had been worn smooth from many years of use. I couldn't see a wood grain there but the edges look like bone and the brown coloration of the handle looks like old worn stag.

What ever they are it has been rehandled. Case Brothers would not have left the handles that rough next to the bolsters.
