All About Pocket Knives

Should we call these father & son or grandfather & grandson.

Early 1946/47 242 & later 242. Not sure of the year for the black comp handled one.

To me quality is with the Grand Dad. Bone handles. wider main blade & back spring. Half stop on the secondary. Just over all a better made knife IMO.

Picked these both up off the bay over the last week or so. Finally able to post pics.

Great looking pair, the bone on the grandpa is outstanding.

A handsome pair for sure.

Great little knives! They are not shown in SW catalogs until 1953. From what little I have seen of the early 1950s knives, 1953/54 is about the time they added "U.S.A." to the tang stamps. I suspect the condition of the stamps dictated the more exact time of their use. There were several sizes of them, obviously.

Very nice pair. I have the uncle. Edit: I just noticed that the Father & Son Knives posted here are both Schrade Walden Knives so maybe I should call this one the granddaddy. I looked it up on the Schrade PDF files and found a 3 1/8" Jack in the 1940 catalog that is identical in every way except that it's stainless. It's listed as SS2423 so I guess this model is a 2423.

Nice stainless 242. It's funny how when you get a new pattern that you start seeing more of them on the road.

Rex, the Schrade Cut Co SS2423 (SS for stainless steel) listed on the 1940 catalog is the stainless steel model. Mine is a Schrade Cut Co with 1095 high carbon steel so, most likely a 2423 model. Hence the "granddaddy" comment as it came before Schrade Walden. When Schrade Cut Co became Schrade Walden (in 1946) the 3 on the 2423 was dropped. I don't remember what the 3 stood for. Possibly stag bone handles.

The 1095 high carbon steel (like both of yours) is my favorite type steel. It's tough but easy to sharpen and stays sharp plus I love a nice patina too. You got yourself a great looking pair there, buddy. I especially like the "father" of the father and son twosome but they compliment each other very well.

Ahh - Got it Felix. I'm partial to the carbon steel blades myself.
