All About Pocket Knives

Hi guys,
I have a mystery.
Came across this knife for a good price and just had to have it.
Can anyone tell me about it?
I have never seen Western Field. It is a beautiful red handle. It came with a sheath, but not an original one at all.
It is 8" over all. Blade is about 4 1/2" long.
Where did this come from? Who made it and when and any idea on a price? I don't want to sell it,just curious.

Western Field, I believe was a brand name of Western Auto stores. I have seen that brand on knives made by Western, but that one does not have the bifurcated tang indicative of knives made by Western.
That knife may have been made by Camillus.

Western Field was a Montgomery Wards brand. I agree it was made by Western. Best guess 60's or earlier. Beautiful condition!

Yep; definitely Western Boulder #48 pattern. The double pinning is hard to see in the op photos but it is there.

That is a Western Field (for Montgomery Wards) by Western model 48BGG.

Although they actually came out in late 1948 or early 1949 (based on old magazine ads), the 48BGG first officially appeared in the 1950 catalog.

This was the only 48 that had a fuller in that early post-war manufacturing build up. They came in red, orange and ivory phenolic plastic.

The other early plastic handled knives by Western were the 48BAP, 48CAP and 28AP

Later, the 48BGG model # changed to 48ABG in 1954 or 1955 and then again changed to the P48A in 1959, when its model number was changed to match all other Western fixed blade model stamp. All 1959 48A models (L/6/2/P) had a fuller.

The 48BGG does not have a model number on it, but the other 2 do.

we had a Montgomery Wards store in my local home town and have seen that stamp a lot. They put that Western Field mark on a lot of their items they sold. It was made by Western for M.W. Nice old knife. Terry

Kinda brings back a nice memory or two. I always thought Montgomery Wards was a good store and I hated to see it close and go away. My Dad always called it Monkey Wards.

I still call it Monkey Wards when I refer to it Probably always will.. must be a Texas thing.

We called it that also. Monkey Wards.
Dad loved that store and we loved going to it.
They had a small dining area in the one we had in Colorado. Christmas was the best time to go and best catalog to see come in the mail.

Around west central Indiana shows those sell for around $150, the white ones even more. We have one stamped Western (red) and one stamped Western Field (red). No white ones yet.

It definitely has the double pens in the pommel indicating the bifurcated tang, once I enlarged the picture.

You are right it was Monkey Wards.( I think everyone called them that, even here on the West Coast).

this time,
Any other areas or clubs or shows to explore? We have only been here 3
years. My husband is originally from here but has been away for over 30
years.
