Ivory Remingtons

I have seen a few of these Walrus Ivory Remingtons over the years but this is the only set I have seen with the box. Kitchen carving sets are low on the list of Remington knives but the handles make them desirable.

I have also seen a very few hunters with walrus ivory and very basic totem carving. I had one but it is gone now. Can't even recall the pattern number.

At Smokey mountain knife works there is a pretty intriquite Remington totem pole knife. It looked to have been Ivory, threw the glass. I didn't even know they existed till I saw it. How rare are they?
And your box and carving set are awsome.

All I can say is very rare! I have owned one hunter, handled another at a local dealer and seen one on ebay. I have seen more of the totem folding knives than the totem hunters.

That's interesting. The one SMKW has is a folder. Reminded me of the office knife, as far as size.

I have seen 2 styles of totem folder. One has imitation ivory scales with a small carved real ivory totem pole inlaid into scale and the other has an entire scale of walrus ivory carved as a totem and brightly colored. Both on the office knife sized frame. Special run with no pattern number as I recall. Sargents guide to knives and razors 5th edition pictures one version on page 429.

I found a picture online. I think this is an original with the bright colors. Some are much more worn and faded.

Wow. That is some bright color. Any theory on why they produced It? Advertising? Promotion? Because they wanted to?

No idea why. I recall reading that they were produced by craftsman in Alaska or from Alaska for a promotion but I wouldn't trust my memory. May have been guess work by some one in a publication or even online. If online it must be true right? Watch for them on Ebay and be ready with $500-1000 when a nice one shows up!

Here is the backside of the Totem knife Remumc posted and several others that were posted in threads on AAPK.
These are not my knives! Just using them as reference in this discussion.
Speculation is that Remington sent some knives to Alaskan natives to be handled in the design of a totem. Remington, (also speculated) to have had special made nickel silver shields made in a totem design.
Sargents 6th edition page 318 displays pictures.
The modern Remington toothpick knife has a Totem shield with green Bone and can be bought for around 26.00 dollars.
Note, I have no personal information nor have I seen original documentation from Remington history stating that any of this is true. Not saying it is or not saying it isn't. They are beautiful knives none the less with a very high price tag!
Note: the 3rd pic down appears to be the same design Totem that is on the modern Remington Toothpick Totem design.

Elephant Ivory. As opposed to Mammoth, Mastodon, Walrus, Narwhale, Warthog, Synthetic/Fake, etc., Ivory.

Hey, no worries, my friend...that's the beauty of AAPK: you can ask anything and never have to feel stoopid (unless, of course, you're an unrepentant "hettin' rooskie" or something

)

Thanks, Keith, now it's my turn to feel stupid...I'm not a Remington collector -- these two ivory Barlows are my only Remis, and other than "2008" stamped on the Damascus Razor secondary blade pile side tang (which I assume is the date of manufacture), I don't see any other identifying numbers on either one of them.
