All About Pocket Knives

Guys,
In a recent batch of 'stuff' I got this knife and it looks to be the back half of a big saddlehorn trapper. They must have used left over blades because it has the nail nick on the pile side of the blade. The shield has a Navy or Coast Guard look to it.
I feel sure it is a SFO but I have no clue by whom? Anyone recognize the shield or the knife?

I wonder if that knife is a "left handed" version, but then why wouldn't they put the shield on the other side. Even still, I don't recognize that shield at all. That's really strange looking for a Case.

I really have no idea Ray but a lot, well, not a lot, but some of the early Case knives had a left hand pull on the main blade. I would say you are on the right track with The SFO theory.

You can contact Case and send them a picture. They are great about answering questions. I didn't know what the V in V5220 stood for and they responded right away with Vintage.

Ray, that's an interestin' knife. If no one comes up with the actual purpose of that particular blade, you can list it as a "folding butter knife". When I saw the blade that is the 1st thing that popped into my head.

I'm betting the shield relates to the maritime heritage of Teak Wood. Other knives were made in the same motif, Teak wood handles, anchor shield. There was a Peanut and a Trapper that I saw.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help on this one. I never thought about the 'teak' aspect.

Blade and frame style say "cotton sampler". Nothing to do with maritime association.

I think the difference is obvious. The maritime link is just to the wood used for handles, not the frame or blade of the knife.

The O.P. knife is clearly a Saddlehorn pattern. Cotton Samplers do not have the curved bulbous shape at the end of the handle.
