All About Pocket Knives

Greg had picked up a couple of short line 72's and both had damage to the bone handles. He wanted me to make one good first generation out of them. As you can see after I cut them apart and cleaned them up and put everything back together. Came out real nice too! Hope you like it Greg!

That turned out to be a fine looking knife Randy!! Nicely done.

When you say "Cut them apart" are you using a shear blade to actually cut the back spring pivot pin?

I am using a 1/16" hardened blade to shear the pin but I worry EVERY time that I am going to break a good handle. I still find it easier than drilling, and removing the leftovers but my nerves are paying the price.

Ok.
I use a highly modified chisel because I never thought of a utility blade.
Actually I did but I didn't really try it. Now I'll give it a go, and see how it feels for me.

If you don't have a utility blade handy a junked thin knife blade (not saber ground, too thick) works well in a pinch too.

I just ground down an old wood working chisel, and hardened the edge but I have seen very clever looking "cleaver" style knives used.
Just trying to find the right tool for me...

Thanks Dale. You know I love that pattern. I think I have two boxes of them. And I just bought a couple more! And I have two that I plan on modding in the near future. Whether I'm using, repairing or collecting I love them!

Tommy, if you're talking about these, the answer is no. They are too thin and too brittle.
If however you are talking about these blades used in razor knives then the answer is yes. As I understand Randy, Dale and Glenn, these are what they prefer.

Jerry is correct! I tried those single edge razors at first. One whack and their done and the pin isn't cut.....

Randy if you hadn't cut trail for me, I probably would have tried one of those, even though Dale (I think or it may have been Glenn or somebody else) had already recommended the utility knife blade.

BRASS pins only.
Steel pins need to be drilled or have the peen ground off (as a generality)
