All About Pocket Knives

Hey all, glad I found this site.
I picked up a Shrade 49er knife, all correct marks. However, it has a mother of pearl handle, not solid piece, but very well done. I am unable to find anywhere that one was made with this handle. Maybe added by previous owner? Any clues on fair price? Definitely used, and sheath has name carved in.
Any help would be appreciated!!

It is abalone, not mother of pearl, and nicely done, but almost certainly not by the factory. Welcome to the forum!

I agree with Cal, nice work but definitely not from the factory.

One of the marks on the cap reminded me of the anvil shape stamp used on some Buck knives. Wonder if Buck Custom Shop would rehandle a Schrade knife?

That's a thought, but I saw that mark in the Shrade book, posted in another thread. It does seem a mystery, but it is so well done. I do appreciate the craftsmanship! I also noticed last night, an indintation where your thumb fits perfectly for a nice grip. Funny story, at first I was mad cause the guy told me it was from the 50s now I got the upper hand, I got it for 20. It pays to wander away from a seller!!
regardless of age, I know enough the Shrade is a great knife!!
The "dumb blonde act" doesn't hurt either!
Glad I found this site, got some other Collectible ones I may show. Always had a thing for knives!

The benchmade 49ers all had those marks, one signified the year of manufacture and the other (the anvil) was the cutler's mark.

The 498L (leather handle) was seen in catalogs from 1973 through 1979. The 498S (Staglon handle) was seen in catalogs from 1973 through 1983. This pattern, amongst the 49rs Benchmade series, was the biggest seller and the longest lived in the catalogs. All of the major cutleries made a hunting knife with an odd little shark fin or thumb ramp sticking up from the spine, and customers loved them. This was Schrade's version. It went back to the Schrade Walden years, with the 148, offered both in leather and Delrin handles.
