All About Pocket Knives

Need assistance on recently acquired Buck fixed blade. It comes with a letter signed by Charles T. Buck, dated 7/21/1982. I will quote portions of the letter. The purpose of the letter was to "verify that this custom Eagle Skinner was actually made by the Buck Knife Company of El Cajon, California. The blade is of 425-M steel; Rockwell 58/60; stamped 'Buck Custom USA' on the left side of the ricasso; and the serial number '0007' engraved on it. The handle is fitted with a nickel silver guard and handle material is Prehistoric Ivory from a Mastodon tusk found in Alaska. The eagle scrimshaw is by Mr. D. M. Myrer."
Preliminary searching on the internet has come up empty. Would appreciate any help in finding out more about this knife. I'm new to this website, but can probably attach photos if that will help.

That sounds Very interesting, and there a a lot of Buck fans here.
They will help you figure it out.

I don’t know about assistance but I do know that is one BEAUTIFUL knife . That is something to be proud of for sure, Woody.

I'd suggest that you call Buck and try to talk with Joe Houser. Maybe start with an email to him with the photos.

If not, seems like all you need to know about the knife is in the letter, no?

I ditto what Scott wrote I don’t think there is anything more you can find out about the knife than what is in the letter. It states what it’s made of handle and blade, where it’s made, who made it, it’s authenticity all from the head of Buck on an official Buck co letter head, that’s about as good as it gets. What other info are you looking for

Joe Houser used to be a member here. Haven't seen a post from him in a while. He is, however, a fount of knowledge on all things Buck.

I know they ran a Custom Shop, but I have no idea what it cost to have such knives made. Nor, do I know if the knives produced were all
unique one-offs or custom ordered, or just produced in small lots for general sale.

Beautiful knife. I wish they had scrimshawed both handles, though.

Thanks folks for all your responses. Yes, I do have a ton of info included in that letter. The only other things I was wondering about were it's approximate value and how many were actually made.
I sent an email to Buck Knives and got a very cordial initial response. My email was being forwarded to their "historian". Hope to hear back from him soon.

I found a web site where another scrimshander by the name of Fisk discussed and illustrated the work he did for The Buck Custom Shop. He did some handles for a "Chief" series and he said he did sixty knives.

I suspect a similar number of the OP knives were done, as well.
