All About Pocket Knives

Another novelty miniature, stainless steel blade, engraved on the shields. I picked it up for £5 in an antique shop. The seller said it would have been used to sharpen quill pens but it's so small (1" blade) and so flimsy that I doubt it could do any useful work. No marking to be found anywhere.
In passing: following on from discussions about the strict laws in the UK on carrying knives, I thought I'd be safe from arrest and prosecution with this one. Not so!
Looking into it further, it turns out that a police officer has complete discretion in deciding what counts as an offensive weapon, even a 1" knife or a tin of soup for that matter, so my proud brandishing of it in my local pub could have got me a criminal record!

I the states for the most part you can carry anything you want, but brandishing will still get you in trouble. And anything used as a weapon is a weapon, including a shod foot, which almost everybody has two of.

At first I thought it might be a German knife such as the one's made by Daniel Peres in the early part of the 20th century.They made a lot of them with aluminum handles usually advertising some event.They also made many miniatures with pearl handles.
Then I thought it could be one of those cheap knives that were made in Czechoslovakia with the faux tortoise shell handles and toothpick and ear spoon included but it is much better quality than those.
Then I thought it might be one of those Japanese made knives that had the engraved sterling silver handles but it looks too old to be one of those. So the mystery deepens.
As an aside I remember when I lived in Massachusetts many years ago and would read the police reports in the Boston paper one of the most common charges leveled against people was...........wait for it...... "Assault and battery by means of a shod foot"! Used to laugh every time I read that line and would imagine all manner of criminal footwear.

You're a handsome lad Iain and won't fare well in prison, so cease and desist with your brandishing ways. Find yourself a fine lass, settle down and live a life of peace without dangerous weapons.

Thanks all. I enjoy posting up my finds here and reading your responses as much as actually finding the knives! Jerry, too kind . It's been a long time since I heard myself described as a lad (or handsome, come to think of it ).
Eveled ,point taken that almost anything can be used as an offensive weapon. The weird thing about the UK law (if I have this right, and my only training is YouTube videos...) is that anything can potentially be defined as an offensive weapon even if it is concealed, is not being used offensively, and without evidence that it is going to be used as such. Granted that shod feet (never heard that expression over here) can be used as an offensive weapon but if mere possession of them can be deemed a crime, nearly all of us are in big trouble I jest of course, but it is a worry that these things can come down solely to one officer's judgement. That's how people in England have ended up with criminal records for having a Swiss army knife in the glove compartment of their car. Not a joke, unfortunately.

I forget which ale it was, but you can be assured it was dark, flat and slightly warm; just how beer is supposed to be
