All About Pocket Knives

I recently got this Ulster Knife Co NYC lockback knife. Closed, it measures 4 1/2 inches. It is missing a swing guard. Wondering how old the knife is, and is it a fairly scarce knife worth restoration efforts? Thank you!

Hi: It is a pre 1941 knife. The tang stamp like that never existed after 1941. As to repair,
it would be quite a chore, as both covers are missing pieces and hard to match. That is all

I would concur with Dale;it is definitely worth restoring. The guard should be fairly easy to fabricate and the repair of the bone could be accomplished by a good knife repairman.

This company actually made this knife with and without the floating guard. Sometimes the company ran out of guard parts and just made the knives without the guard. I actaully have a nice bone frame that is the same company with a bad blade and made for no floating guard.

It's certainly worth restoring as originally as possible and putting it to some use, it's seen plenty of use so why not? There's tons of life in that blade. That's why knives are enjoyable.

Thanks guys. I'm likely going to have it repaired (as original as possible). I've tried to find a reference for the knife in all of my books, but haven't found it. Would love to see an original ad that includes this knife! Will post a follow-up of the "after" pic when done.

That is a very interesting pattern. Sort of a Gran daddy Barlow/Stiletto hybrid.
I'd love to see it in like new condition.

The above statement regarding tang stamps is not quite correct. The Ulster mountain troops knives manufactured during the war bear the same tang stamp as do other WW2 Ulster knives. I think the stamp stopped being used in 1946.
