All About Pocket Knives

Looking for information on this knife my father-in-law acquired at an auction. I'm curious about the manufacturing date, value and rarity. Thanks in advance!

Nice knife! The design is like the Grohmann knives made in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. Seems to me the tang stamp (G.C.Co) could stand for Grohmann Cutlery Company? I have a couple of Grohmann knives that I have had for over 40 years, however, I have never one handled in anything other than wood. I am heading out of town for a couple of days, however, when I get back I will email a photo of your knife to them, if it is OK with you, to see what they have to say. I have emailed them a couple of times in the past and they have always replied promptly.

G.C. Co is Gutmann Cutlery. They were a large importer in the 1960s and 70s. They even imported Puma for some years.

Gutmann Knives were advertised in a lot of outdoor magazines in the 60's and 70's and I believe your knife is what they called a "boat knife", all I have seen had wooden handles, yours appears to be a stag handle. Nice old knife , thanks for showing it. Terry

Just got a reply from Grohmann, they did not make the knife. Thay said it is a copy of their #1 and they know of 16 different copies of this pattern. Gutman Cutlery sounds good. I don’t believe it is called a boat knife. I have the Grohmann boat knife, it is a slightly different pattern and is stainless steel.

As I recall we had some knives of similar patterns in the cutlery store in the 1980s that were from Guttman.

The font of the stamping on the blade, and the way the stag meets the steel, and the general appearance of the stag itself says 1950s-1970s Germany to me.

Thanks guys! He wants to list it on eBay, any suggestions on an initial asking price? In my research I saw a lot of reference to Anton Wingen Jr. It says Solingen Germany on it, and has a small carving of Othello. What's confusing us is that it has no reference to Anton, as the other knives we saw online.

It is definitely an Anton Wingen, perhaps the second most well known German maker after Puma. Bad day on Ebay $20. Impossibly good day on ebay $100. I really like it. Just my opinion.

The common generic name for that pattern is "Nessmuk".

Found one that sold on ebay back in march of 2012 for $37.75. It was advertised as "Antique Stag Handle Othello Solingen Yukon Hunter Knife and Sheath G.C. Co. 037. But I see a few for around $100 currently. Hope this helps, terry
