All About Pocket Knives

I ran across a knife in my fathers closet. It is in a wooden case with red velvet. On the blade is etching of a cabin with "Two Great Names One Great Knife". COLEMAN/WESTERN 1984. Appears to be a stag handle. I have searched and can't find a knife like it. My father had a knife business and knew Harvey Platts, so is this more an advertising knife?

Westmark was a line of higher end knives started in 1970 with the 701.

Later, the 702 and 703 were added.

In 1984, Coleman bought Western and your knife is one of the "special" commemorative versions celebrating the acquisition of Western.

Unlike all other knives made by Western between 1977 and 1991, Westmark knives did NOT include a year code. Instead, they were serial numbered. Unfortunately, no record of what serial numbers were used when has survived the Coleman/Western transfer, the Coleman to Boulder buisnessmen transfer of 1991, or the Camillus purchase and transfer of assets/production to Camillus NY.

The 1984 commemorative knives are the only one capable of having their date of manufacture identified. Some few have been identified as "Serial # XXXX" was bought in 197X or 198Y, but no "year-ranges" are identifiable.
