All About Pocket Knives

Plenty of room for improvement, and lots of special tricks I need to learn. I have built a few fixed blades, and a friction folder, or three. This build had some interesting challenges, including a broken spring.

Thank you, sir. I have built fixed blades for a few years, but this is a different game.

No stopping yet! After a few of these I am planning to add bolsters and bone.

Thank you. Yes, the half stop does not take much more work than what is already present. I need to perfect my flush back spring on all stops...that is tricky.
Have not held a Western 521. Will look those up!

Thanks. I used that removable pivot since was my first. Figured I would be disassembling it a few times. I was right!
I plan on using the same for the next few that I build.

That looks really good! Don't be worried about criticism, some people don't even know how to use tools, and you're building something from scratch! Remember that.

Maybe one day we'll be saying "hey, have you seen the latest from Tony Wood? That guy really makes a great knife!"

And a second one. Some things better, and a couple things worse than the first one.

Tony, hat's off!! Isn't it liberating to produce something for yourself that you can't get anywhere else? Did you figure out why the backspring broke, and did you do anything different to prevent breakage next time?

Thanks, Lee. It is very gratifying to make something that is unique and individual.
After that first backspring broke I went back to reading. Two things were improper on the broken one: first, the spring was too thick, and thus did not 'spring' as it should have; second, the temper was wrong. The spring needed to to be tempered more than what I had drawn it back to. I made four new springs after that initial fail, and tested two of them. The spring in the knife now was tested 250 times before I pinned the knife together.

Thank you, sir. It is easier to do a few at a time rather than just one. Saves time during heat treat, switching belts on the grinder, etc.
when it comes to finishing, I only have the patience for one at a time.
