All About Pocket Knives

Here is a Camillus Knife that is for sale on EBay, and the seller lives 5 miles from me. I was just curious to know when this was made and what model it is. The tang stamp doesn't look like any that I'm familiar with (albeit I've only been collecting for 3 months now) I think the seller.wants $13 O/B/O. Here are some screen shots I took.

A no line from the '40s for $13. If the blades have snap, you better be on that 99 like white on rice. Seller should be up for local pickup (no shipping)

Got the knife for $10! Now all I have to do is wait for the mail to come. Yup....seller lives literally 10 min from my house and they won't do local pick-up. I suggested to meet in a public place and they expressed that they didn't feel comfortable doing that. Oh well...I guess we all have our reasons for doing the things we do. Though I would had been nice to bypass the mailman and not have to explain to the Mrs. why I bought another pocket knife. I look at it this way. She likes her shoes and I like my knives.

I can relate to that! Both my wife and I have a steady stream of packages being delivered and we just don't ask each other questions. We both understand there is a line that we do not cross when it comes to personal spending, and as long as we stay under that, we're both MUCH happier if we don't know the details. Of course, dropping $20-30 on a knife is becoming very, very easy and I really need to start spacing those out a bit more...

I recall well the 1st time I paid over $100 for a knife. I suspected I was in need of counseling and my bride was quite sure I needed it.

Ray I felt the same way on my first $100 knife, but that first $1000 knife pretty much cemented those details.

$1000 for a knife? Is this what I have to look forward to?

Here are two Tommy and a couple more that came pretty close.

I haven't spent $100 on a single knife - yet. However, my problem is that yesterday I spent $80 on 4 knives, and a few days ago I did the same. So, I have spent $160 on "knives" in just the last few days. I would have better off spending $100 on *one* really nice knife! That's the part I can't seem to get through my thick coconut. But, winning an auction for $22 to buy what I think is a knife worth $30 is just too much fun...

.........those are beautiful, greg!!!!.........most I ever spent was almost $300.00 on a Camillus sunfish!!........I had to have one because that's what my grandfather always carried,that and a Camillus splitback whittler.....he died in 1952 and to this day, I do not know what happened to them???............. ....................

And you think you're the only one? Quantity over Quality.

With vintage knives you can buy quite a few used ones for the price of a minty never used example. When it comes time to sell you are more likely to re-coup all your money with the one minty example. However we learn from looking at & handling knives so acquiring a large number of inexpensive used vintage knives is a bit like having a reference library.
And, old 'beater' knives are not fakes. If you want to use one of your knives as a reference for what constituted the original knife, then the beater is real, the near mint might be a buffed & altered knife.

For me I am in the beginning stage of collecting, and the knives I buy I like to carry. Right now my favorite is 4 Line Camillus TL-29 with wood handles. The embossed "TL-29" is barely visible. I just thinks it's amazing how a knife that is maybe 70 years old is just as sturdy as the day it was made. I'm sure that as time goes bye and I become more educated about this hobby that I will be a bit more adventurous in my purchases. When I started playing guitar I played guitars that were...so so. I soon learned the differences in build quality which always translates into playability. Started with a $150 guitar back in 92 to a 3k Les Paul. But if I'm going to spend 3k on a knife it better be a friggin
