All About Pocket Knives

’m new to knife collecting and would much appreciate any info on a knife I recently bought on Cape Cod. On upper edge of handle is inscribed:”.925 [copyright symbol] FM. 83 96”.
The seller said this indicates the knife is sterling silver and color indicates it has a gold wash. Base of blade reads “Stainless Steel.” Your thoughts?

Welcome to AAPK! At first I thought the knife might be of Scandanavian origin because of the design but the scissors blade leads me to believe it may be of either Japanese or Chinese origin.
The covers are indeed sterling silver if so marked. One word of caution: You should NEVER open two blades that are on the same spring at the same time as it puts a tremendous amount of strain on the back springs and can cause them to break. On a knife of that pattern it would be prohibitive to replace one if they did.

Are you sure there are no markings to indicate country of origin or name of merchant or manufacturer ?
By law country of origin must be marked if not made in USA. This does not look like a USA made knife. If there are no markings then likely it is from China as they sometimes mark "China" as a superficial etch that is easily rubbed off.
Chinese manufacturers are quite capable of making quality knives and the prices are low and so often are ordered by merchants, gift shops, etc.
Very attractive Gent's knife, made in the style of gents knives from Sweden as k7k mentions.

Thanks to both of you for your helpful insights. As a newby to knife collecting, I'm already beginning to learn that the American knife market seems to have been flooded by products made in China. While some seem to be pretty well made, my preference is not to buy knives made in that country, since they are almost by definition knock-offs. I've given the knife a pretty thorough going over with a jeweler's loupe and can't find any maker's mark or country of manufacture on it. So it looks like I may have purchased a "made in China" knife. At least it's a pretty one.

Your thoughts on knives made in China are a bit out of date.
Chinese knife manufacturers employ their own designers and in the Tactical knives group (which is huge) China leads the way in high end, high tech, knives. Check out Reate Knives, WE Knives, Real Steel Knives & others. Some of these knives retail at $900, however for $15 you can buy a SanRenMu 0710, which looks like a Small Sebenza and performs almost as well.
Many USA knife companies have their knives made in China, e.g. CRKT, SpyderCo, and many others. Many of these knives are also designed in China for these USA companies.
