All About Pocket Knives

Some of the DNA is obvious, some more subtle. Who did it?????


A.G. Russell was dropping his prices on these, and suddenly they started to get sold, so I pulled the trigger on these 4, plus one from a favorite seller, and present them here for your ogling pleasure.

So who made them?? Ulster? Schrade? Camillus? or????

Beautiful knives upnorth!

One word of caution: it is risky to open blades at each end of a knife at the same time with a shared (pen) spring. It deflects the spring further than it is designed to be. At worst it can set (weaken) the spring or at least increase the chances of cracking the handle material at the mid pin.
Some knives tolerate it better than others, so briefly for a photo might be safe, but I would recommend never displaying that way long term.

It is a very common error, quite often committed by the advertising departments of cutlery companies in photography! I had to remind them at Camillus a few times.

I never display that way, and only open one blade per backspring if the tension is high. These didn't feel too bad, but I will watch it!
So, did Camillus make any of these??

I'd say bottom three definately schrade, the whittler, maybe camillus, not sure about the top one?

Ok here is a chance to make fun of me If any one of these is a Camillus I feel it would be the top one. the next down is a keen Kutter by Schrade. The third could be an Ulster but I feel it is a Schrade walden, No shield and transitional bone jigging pattern. the bottom two look like Schrades to me, right around the early 70tys could be Schrade Walden or just into the later 70tys and under just Schrade if AG had them probably late Schrade Waldens the bottom one imi bone jigged delrin. the one above it looks like jigged delrin but again from AG might be bone hard to tell from the pic. ( I guess delrin) I want to complain about the test there were to many variables, without enough info. Which is why I look like a dope it really isn't that I am a dope as long as I can blame the test and not my stupidity. At least I took a shot. PS I would not be surprised if one or more came in the original plastic tube. Seriuosly thanks for the post sorry for mistakes besides I have been laughed at before. LT

OK for what it's worth:

Top knife looks almost like it was made by Pal Cutlery.I've seen that jigging somewhere and I'm not sure where.The nickel silver pins are confusing.The blade shape is also Pal.

The next knife looks to be a Camillus;I've seen that pattern before and the jigging is consistent/

That 3rd knife I think may have been made by Winchester.Again the jigging and the style.

The 4th could be a Schrade but I'm thinking Robeson although weren't the two companies tied in somehow?

I guess the last one is a schrade.

Just back from New Mexico, and wanted to thank you all for having a look. I don't know the answers, but your comments help. There was a lot of cross-pollination in the 50s, 60s and 70s, so sometimes it is hard to pin knives like these down.
The problem is, at this stage in history, you need hundreds of knives to carefully compare, if you want to get it right most of the time.
