Hey guys and idea on how to remove the green on this Case Classic elephant to knife.

I have had that problem too. It was on a Case Railsplitter Jack 5299 1/2 from the late 1960's. I have not found a way to remove the green. I was told a couple different stories as to the cause. One was hand oils turning it green, and another was that it was coming from the brass liners or bolsters depending on the model. I have seen this on Case Shark Tooth knives as well, and they have large brass bolsters.

I ended up selling that knife. I listed it as having rare Martian Stag. (Not really.)

That is verdigris and comes from the brass bolsters it can be worse if you had the knife stored in a leather sheath. If the sealant on the stag is still present it should clean off with soap and water. I've heard oxiclean is good for it but I haven't tried it. If the sealant has been polished away the verdigris will soak deep into the stag and is almost impossible to clean away.

I have stag peanut with greenish color on one end near the bolster. I bought it new and it had the green when I got it. In fact I picked it out and bought it because of that coloring. I've had it over 40 years and it hasn't changed. Still has the same amount of greenish tint it had when I bought it.

I think mine is from the dye, not from verdigris, as the bolsters are not also greenish. I've seen it on other Case stag but not often, and not to the extent of that on the OP knife. The others I've seen that have verdigris on the bolsters had been stored in a leather sheath. As Greg said, on those it wiped off with a soft cloth and some elbow grease.

I'm not where I can access the knife right now or I'd post pictures of it.

Try semi chrome polish works for me

If you use any kind of polish on it make sure you reseal the stag area that you polish or you will have a reoccurrence.

Gregg what do you use to reseal it. Should the handles on old fixed blades be resealed over time? Thanks

mrwatch I like to use a tung oil gloss but lots of people just use a bit of zap-a-gap. I've really only had this problem on knives with brass bolsters in stag and light colored wood handles like curly maple. When you polish the bolsters with say Flitz or Brasso and you don't take the precaution of covering the handles near the bolsters , you are going to polish away the protection that the handles originally had.
