All About Pocket Knives

Cool Samuel Lee cleaver I picked up last year for $5, finally got around to cleaning the rust off of it, repaired the grind and put a hair popping edge on it. It appears to have a laminated construction, hardened tool steel cored with a soft outer layer and spine. It seems to may have a construction similar to that of the old inserted bit forged axes.

You are right, that is a cool old cleaver. And the price was right too!!

Nice cleaver. But, who or what is meant by Samuel Lee? The name on the cleaver, in a very clear deep-stamp, is subordinate to the well-known Landers, Frary & Clark knife manufacturer.

I could not find anything about any Samuel Lee that suggested an affinity with knives, however much the name sounds like a guy who could have been an Indian fighter or an original founder of the Republic of Texas -- or even a martial arts practitioner.

I hope to add some margin notes into my copy of Goins from this inquiry.

Samuel Lee was likely the customer whom L.F.&C. made the cleaver for.

Samuel Lee just rang a bell! I found this old butcher knife a few years ago with the Samuel Lee name on the blade and there is a bunch of info on the internet concerning Samuel Lee stamped knives and cleavers made by L.F.& C.
