I was sorting through some knives and pulling out the bone handled ones...most of these are Schrades

Nice collection of Old Bones at rest.
I’m sure that you keep them oiled so they don’t become Creaky Old Bones.

Very interesting to me, the different jigging patterns on those 863s. I prefer the pattern on the single. Something about the old bone that draws people to it.

That is a lot of good looking Schrade knives. Are they all either never used or only lightly used and with full blades ?

Joe, There's some there that have had plenty of use and show it, some I've sanded the blades to look darn new, and a couple that have almost no wear.
I've got a couple displays that will only hold a closed knife so some of them were bought just because I like the looks of the old bone scales.

I know a lot of collectors don't like the idea of cleaning an old knife. When I first started collecting I asked a collector I'd come to respect about that. He gave me what I consider good advice. He said that if you like them bright and shiny then shine them up, if you like them with a patina then leave it on the blade, but always remember.... dirt is not patina. Personally, I like bright and shiny. Here's a before and after closeup of the handle on that Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co ..top left I assume that the dark crap filling the jigging in the top picture is an accumulation of sweat and dirt...one thing I know for sure, is that it's about as hard as a rock and soaking it in warm soapy water and using a bristle brush is about the only way to get it out

I started getting some stags. Now I am hooked on stag! ( of course
it happens to be more expensive too !
