My Dad and I, 1948.

That's pretty neat Cal. Very clear for a picture that was taken 70 years ago. I'm going to assume that photo was taken in the late afternoon. Also, because there's nothing but flat land in the background, it was most likely taken way out in the sticks. Great picture for sure.

That's a great picture with your Dad the steam locomotive Derek. My grandfather is next to a French loco in WW I. He is in the middle.

It's nice to look at the great old pictures.

Thank you, Roland.
No, they weren't clearing land. My dad was mechanic by trade, but he just loved being up in northern Idaho and my mother was happy to be with him. I remember my mother saying "some of the places we wandered into were so beautiful it was like Gods waiting room".

I love old family pictures. I have been the "family genealogist" for over twenty years, and have received many boxes of family pics from many aged relatives. Before my dad passed, we spent several years off and on scanning them and categorizing them.

Did you know that bell is a "Dinner Bell"? Used to call the men from the field for the mid day meal (dinner where I came from).

Borrowed from the New Britain Connecticut police department's archives is a picture of Buffalo Bill Cody and his entourage, taken between 1914-1916. The police officer is my great grand father Patrolman Michael J. Cosgrove who became a New Britain Police Officer in 1894 at the age of 36. It was said that he had a very amiable face, drawing people to him. In all of the police department photos that exist during his time of service (including the one above featuring Buffalo Bill Cody). Patrolman Cosgrove is easily recognized by his distinct mustache, cheekbones, eyes, and ears. Retiring in 1928 at the age of 70, he had the distinction of being “One of New Britain’s oldest officers. Patrolman Cosgrove was still an active duty officer when his son, Daniel J. Cosgrove, became a New Britain Police Officer as well. It was said that Daniel too possessed many of the same features as his father, always able to draw people in with his kind face and gentle disposition. In the 1950’s, Daniel J. Cosgrove would become Chief of the New Britain Police Department. This photo was taken on Linwood Street near the Klingberg Children’s Home and showing houses that are still standing today, is now thought to have been taken by Rev. Dr. John Eric Klingberg himself. This is due to the fact Rev. Klingberg was an avid photographer and the proximity of which this would have been to the home.

My paternal grandfather. He had uhh... some knives.

That's what we called them too. Use to see a lot around. In my part of the country they also used the triangle. It could be heard from a ways too. And in times past, in my metal detecting days, I used to always hunt under the clothes line as on occasion if something made it through the 'warsh' it might fall out under the clothes line.

Another use for them Cal. I started school in a one room school house out in the country in the Bone Gap Illinois area and we had one of those bells to call us in after recess.

Cal, is the bell long since gone? Would be cool to have it now.
