Schrade Cut. Co. Too Good To Be True?

I know nothing about Schrade Cut. Co. era knives, so I'm posting this here.

Sometimes, great looking things are not what they purport to be.

So, tell me, good or bad?

That sure is a beauty. It must have been stored very carefully to still be so pristine.

Been cleaned. Front of the blades should be polished.

I’m with you Charlie, something isn’t right here. Those blades look too pristine or else they have been replaced. I think the whole knife has been taken apart, polished and put back together. That’s a pretty high bid for something like this.

Doesn't look to have been cleaned to me.

Pictures for posterity.

I agree with M&G, knife has been cleaned but I don't think it was apart or rebuilt. Front of blades as stated should have a crocus (full mirror polish), backs of blade a glaze finish somewhat similar to what is there now. The tangs do not look fooled with so I doubt the knife was apart to refinish the blades. Would be really sweet were it truly original, nice as it is for what it is.

Not all had the mirror polish, I have some that are right from the factory without a mirror polish. ::nod::

I do realize that Dmitri, but that finish just looks a little rougher than original Schrade glaze to me. Of course none of us have the knife in hand and photos often just don't get the job done. I would sort of expect a premium knife like that to at least have the front of the main blade in crocus, and I have had some with crocus front main and glaze both sides secondaries. The few large Shcrade regular and swell end minty jacks I have had did have the front of the main blade crocus and all other surfaces glaze. I wonder if the old catalogs specify blade finish as those of some other companies do?

Yes, Schrade CutCo did so at least part of the time. Meanwhile, I posted in this thread and it disappeared. ?

I hate to cite someone else's knives as reference, but Charlie Campagna has posted numerous scans here and on BF, of Schrade Cut. Co. knives that have glazed finishes on the front of the blades. That memory is what prompted the post. I've always had the impression that Charlie collected knives in as pristine condition as he could obtain. If he's collecting cleaned knives, I'm not aware of it.

That really big spear blade with long pull bothered me a bit. We don't see many like that. Remington Bullet knives come to mind when I see a blade like that. Not suggesting the blade is Remington, it's just what it causes me to think of.

It's a really pretty knife and based on some that Charlie owns, I was just wondering if it was real or Memorex.

I'll say it again, it's real and from where I'm sitting looks all original.

And as I think you implied on your first post, the description does not sound like a con man.

Exactly Mel ::tu::

I think Charlie has lost a lot of confidence in me after that snake in the tree incident :)

Dimitri, I would never lose confidence in you. You are the AAPK Guru.

If you follow the link I posted, you'll see an identical knife that Charlie posted on BF. It wasn't his knife, but it's identical to this one.

The final decision will have to be with the knife in hand, but I lean toward a correct knife. I have seen all-glaze finish Schrade Cuts, but the big majority would have a Crocus finish on that main blade on that pattern.
The tangs look like they are from a knife that was stored in ideal conditions. A knife that old can be in near mint condition.
So, who's going to buy it so we get the answer, hmmmm????

The size of the spear blade and the pull look OK to me Charlie N. But I'd still like to look at that knife close up!

Somebody has paid $510.00 for the privilege of doing just that.

I see $510 as about $200 on the high side. It is a rather plain knife that seems odd, out of 'balance' the master blade looks too big for the handle. It is not too big, it is just the impression it gives.
What do the Schrade collectors say about this price ? I might be underestimating what SCC knives are selling for now.

I agree, Roland! A very high price, unless it winds up being near mint!!
I hope we find out who bought it!

I thought that was a great looking knife but the price went way past what I was thinking. FWIW this one didn't get a crocus polished blade.

Thanks Jason, I've been looking for my catalog.

Nice pattern, looks original finish, big knife, cool shield on a Schrade, and I'm not the seller or buyer. Something you could have gotten for less than $100 a few years before Schrade went out of business.

"Something you could have gotten for less than $100 a few years before Schrade went out of business."
I don't think prices for a minty Schrade Cut Co knife were that low in 2004, or even 10 years prior (1994). I recall prices in the $250-$300 range unless my mind is slipping worse than i am aware.
How about a third & fourth opinion here please ?
