BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
If you are interested in Boker knives, German or American made, there is finally a detailed reference book available to you. Ricky Ray and Neal Punchard (AAPK members rangerbluedog and Mason) have written what I believe to be the most comprehensive study of Boker knives available to date. I've got a copy and it's a wonderful addition to my knife library. If you're into Boker knives you NEED to buy this book.

Re: BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
On page 157 Boker tang stamps are shown. Notes above shows "G" = Germany & U.S. = American made. In the chart there is reference to "G1". I cannot find any other reference to "G1" or how it differs from "G".
I have a Gunstock marked on both blades: "H.Boker & Co's/Improved/Cutlery". Tree on back side. Chart page 157 gives this as a German marking, however there is no "Germany" on the knife and it looks to be more recent than pre 1891.
I will post a picture when daylight arrives.
This is not really the right thread for this question but i could not see a better option.
Do we need a new thread "Questions arising from the new Boker book " ?
I'm sure others will find things they want to ask about.

Re: BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
Thanks kj,
You have helped identified an error in the book.
The G1 you mentioned is a carryover from Mark Zalesky's original version of the tang stamp chart that was published in KNIFE WORLD magazine in November 2009. The four line stamp where that note appears is in column one, row two of the updated version. The G1 stamp which is mentioned is 3 rows below it.
The error lies in the formatting of those two tang stamps.
The Four-Line improved stamp is shown in the book as H.BOKER / & CO'S / IMPROVED CUTLERY,
(note only 3 lines). It SHOULD read H. BOKER / & CO'S / IMPROVED / CUTLERY (4 lines) The stamp shown 3 rows below that reads H. BOKER & CO's / IMPROVED CUTLERY (2 lines),
but it should read H. BOKER & CO'S / IMPROVED / CUTLERY (3 lines). Give us a couple of days and we will correct this chart and find a way to get everyone an updated copy. We will be printing a corrected page to insert in the future book shipments.
Thanks for your help! We definitely want to get it right! This will be corrected in the 2nd edition

Re: BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
Thank you ! Mine is the 3 line: H.Boker's & Co/Improved/Cutlery. And this could be Germany or USA, but mine is USA by shield & absence of "Germany".
So nice to have this reference book. It adds meaning to be able to place it in time.
And thank you for using a fairly large font. It makes reading it EASY ! which means i won't ever hesitate to pick it up to check something.
I am very pleased i bought this book and i am not even a Boker collector, just happen to have a few.

Thank you, kj for making it even better!
Nothing pleases us more than seeing folks use the book as a reference in exactly the way you are doing.

Re: BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
-A brief personal review of the Boker book authored by two of our fellow members. In the past, I have occasionally been disappointed by one or another knife book. Such is definitely not the case with the Boker book. It is a pleasure to read on many levels. The font and sizes chosen make reading easy on aging eyes. My copy came with an insert correcting an error on tangs in the main text. This insert will undoubtedly be included in all future copies.
-I especially appreciate how the authors chose to organize their work. The first 5 chapters cover the history of the brand. No small task given a brand that dwells in parts of four centuries, spans several continents, and a variety of corporate acquisitions. In lesser hands this could have made for heavy going. While obviously very thorough, the text is lively and vigorous easily holding my attention. This is an exceptionally interesting presentation.
-The next bit of organizational wizardry is devoting a separate chapter to each principal pattern: Barlow, Congress, Stockman etc. This permits
an uncommonly full exposition on the development of each pattern. Much of the information in these chapters was new to me; very instructive indeed. I do a lot of reading and am invariably grateful to authors who contribute to my education as is the case here.
-Contributing to both the utility and beauty of the book are the fine photographs. I was particularly pleased to see a 1983 Boker I have ordered featured in one of the photos.
-I will close with this. The Boker book is certainly a splendid reference for the brand; no doubt the definitive reference. However, for anyone interested in knives, it is more than a reference. It is a heck of a good read.

Re: BOKER BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE !
Blue it's not hard to understand why your book would have been a finalist. You and Neal did a heck of a job creating it.
Congratulations and good luck.
