My wife's sister got an appliance of some sort from her husband....

I got the , "Don't you EVER....." speech from my FUTURE wife!

The Christmas before we were married, 1965, my wife bought me a new Colt Trooper DA Revolver .357 ($85), the Christmas after we were married, 1966, she bought me a Case C6105 SAB W/wooden handles and a raggedy old '42 MB Jeep ($150).
Gift wise, it's been down hill ever since, I still have the .357 and knife and the wife

And then along came Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem!! I went to school with Betty Friedan's kids. She had a son who had curly blond hair and was considered very cute by the girls in high school. Poor guy shied away from girls, likely due to his domineering mother. He was one of the smartest kids in our school. I am 71 and I think perhaps ours was the last generation where women were taught home ec in school and how to make their own clothes, cook WELL, and be practical. Heck, most young folks these days, men or women don't seem to care about home cookin', forget patching an article of clothing or making a shirt from scratch. My mother made sure I could make myself a wholesome meal, mend my own blue jeans, and do laundry without ruining it. Boy Scout master also taught us guys a lot about cooking, nobody wanted to rely on the crap fast food that is so prevalent these days. Was a dang fine country after WW2, dunno what happened to our society in the last thirty years.

That’s one of my wife’s favorite chapters. Not a bad read for women, or men for that matter. Good advice for both.

Ran out of ideas Christmas before last and bought a battery operated drill and a set of drill bits for Linnea. I'll never make that mistake again. This past Christmas we needed a drill and bits to hang some pictures she had received. Took a while to find the drill and longer to find the drill bits. A year later, the drill hadn't been opened. I'm not totally stupid. I got the picture.

Geez guys. it was a useful gift.

Me: Yeah, good luck with that.

Ok, so I’m a woman doing everything the guys do at the factory, except welding and the forklift. We’ve had female welders, I’m just not interested. Ditto the forklift. I use air tools all day, I repair skids (pallets) and then load them with heavy school furniture, after first assembling it. I’m good with a hammer. I’d be delighted with my own home drill - the one I have has a ratty cord.

However...

If my ex had given me an appliance for Christmas, I would have been fine with it. I don’t really cook, but he did, professionally. Still would have been ok.
I think the way it should go is a simple division of work based on skill and inclination. He cooked, I put new zippers in his jeans. I liked to sing with the radio while I did dishes. We just did what had to be done. Same with looking after the kids. Depending on who was at work or looking after a parent, the person at home got the boys, diapers and all. We didn’t do the ‘mens work, woman’s work’ thing. It was ‘family work’.
