All About Pocket Knives

Hey just wanted to show what I made to carry this year for hunting. It is not finished to perfection but I am going to use it so I am happy.

What does the blade measure ?

It is rather small but feels good in the hand, 7" overall with a little under 3" blade.

Looks just fine to me! A good skinner will be a bit small in the hand to increase dexterity, save the bigger handles for the heavy work with bigger, thicker blades. Did you forge this blade? It looks like an intergal. Pretty nice pattern welded steel. I like it, what kind of wood is it?

The wood is Babinga and the picture does not do it justice, it is highly figured. I bought a blade blank and did some work on it. It is neet how the steel looks normal then after etching it in acid the pattern shows up.

What are you hunting for ?

If it's food you want just sell me that knife and you can buy food...

I hope you made more then just one....

Can you make one with a YELLOW handle for me ?...

Your camera focused in on the blade, I have that problem when I take pictures of a knife with a mirror finish. Sometimes I leave the blade taped to get a good picture of the handle.

Did you use a 3:1 water Ferric Chloride mix? I've heard of guys using 4:1:1 Water:Ferric Chloride:Vinegar to get a slow etch.

I think you did a great job on that knife.

I am going to carry it for deer hunting.
I used a 3-1 mix with vinegar. the etch was so dark I thought I would have to polish and repeat. But before I tried "never dull" wadding and it finally cleaned up.
No desire to make a yellow handle justold, besides I thought I read you just bought one that was yellow.
I am getting the urge to try another one though, probably another damascus.

That would make a fairly slow etch, which is what you want.

You can find some pretty darn nice Damascus Billets on eBay. 2 I like are Blue Springs Forge, (bigjake04 ebay user name) billets by Chad Nichols and Deer Mountain Forge, (music_04 ebay user name) billits by Craig Barr. These all need to be heat treated after you cut and grind out your blade.

For Damascus blades with mild steel handles Grand Leavitt of snakeriverknives (also his eBay user name) is by far tops, IMO. For something similar, Two Finger Knife is decent, (ebay user name is swordman39).

I guy I really like to do business with is Tony Metsala, who carries billets from a lot of other makers. He is very helpful and giving with technical information. (eBay user name metsalaknives and store name of METSALA CUSTOM KNIVES)

I have gotten helpful information from Craig Barr, Chad Nichols, Tony Metsala, Grand Leavitt and I'm sure that if I had a question for 2 Finger Knife that they would be helpful also.

BUT have you not ever had 2 knives at one time ?

I am sure we all here at AAPK have more than 2 knives each...

So lets make a deal I can NOT pass up when you are done hunting this year.

I still want your knife even if it is not YELLOW.

O and P.S. Good luck on your Deer Hunt. Its the only time its ok to look for big males.... IMO
