All About Pocket Knives

Let me start by saying I am way out of my comfort zone here and not sure I made a good acquisition or not, I know very little about Schrade auto knives.

This one popped up on Ebay Sunday for a decent BIN as far as I know, looked to be in honest 90% condition although the seller who is not a knife person described it as fair. Looked to be far better than that to me.

Showed up today and I am blown away with this knife, first I did not realize just how big it is, almost 5" closed, seller showed it next to a ruler but the mass of the knife really surprised me. Bone is perfect no chips or cracks, blade is full with a sharp pointy tip, looks to be original edge and lots of original blade finish, only real negative is stain took away part of Hunters etch. Knife opens and closes exactly as it should with a little up and down play when open and locked. Blade lock works and there is no cracked or broken bone at the lock push button area which I understand is common.

I've looked for other examples and there are not a lot out there, a member posted a very nice one with a better etch and that's about it so I would guess this is a fairly rare Schrade. Any idea of when it was made based on Patent Dates? What do you all think as far as condition and value? I've seen some pretty high numbers thrown around out there but asking and real world selling value are 2 different things, I try to keep a list for the wife so she doesn't sell everything for 5 bucks at a yard sale when a kick the bucket.

All i can say is "WOW !" Find of a lifetime for a Schrade collector. And condition looks just a step below 'mint'. And, functioning button & lock is less common than those that do not work.
Value i could only guess at but i do think it is one of the highest value Schrade Cut. Co.'s.

John that's an amazing find, and you're right they're VERY hard to find in that condition even without the etch, THAT just brings it to another level. It really doesn't appear to have ever been used. Bare minimum $500, probably closer to $600 or $650. I personally wouldn't sell it for less than $600.

John, nice example of a fantastic pattern. The etch on mine is a bit faint and the knife has to angled just right to make it visible to the camera. If you develop an interest in the pattern, Schrade made these on contract for other manufacturers such as Remington and Case. There is also a smaller 4" version often referred to as a Paratrooper knife. The paratrooper was also made for Remington (R2303) and Case (61214 1/2).

Those are really sweet "Grail" knives, nice find!

Thank you Ralph, beautiful knives you have there. It's nice to see another example, I thought maybe the very dark area of staining on the mark side bone was something the knife had picked up over the years but seeing your example is the same I guess it's just the way Schrade dyed the bone, they are pretty large slabs of jigged bone.
I would like to pick up more but they usually are out of my price range but I will keep my eyes open.

KJ, thank you for commenting on the knives. You have some amazing knives in your collection so I think the "amateur" assessment isn't really applicable to your knife collecting acumen (lol).

I just now saw this forum topic. Awesome knife!!! It is one of my top 5 that I am trying to collect. Fortunately I found one on ebay not too long ago. And you are right they are big in person and the bone is gorgeous. I really enjoy carrying mine. It is, IMO, the ultimate American made switchblade.
If you have one please post a picture.

I've been enjoying these pics and thinking the same thing. Today I landed an unexpected "Fisherman's Pride" so never say "never".

I'd call it a companion model to the "Hunter's Pride". Both knives are listed in the 1938 (date corrected) pricelist.

Here are snips of the related supplements and pricelist so we can see the model numbers and original prices. Note that the Fisherman's Pride was originally the more expensive of the two. I found that quite surprising since the swing-guard auto-knife is much more complex but maybe the stainless steel drove the cost up a bit. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

The supplements kept sequential page numbers from one supplement to the next and that price list shows your knife is on page 97 - in a catalog that came out in 1936. The price list also references page numbers from the 1938 supplement. I'd venture a guess that 1938 or 1939 is when those price lists were printed.

I think you are absolutely right about the date being off. lrv has it labelled as being from 1932 on his website but somewhere along the line I labelled the same pricelist #342 as being from 1938. I think I did it because I checked what was the highest page number referenced and went to supplements to find that page.

I will fix the previous posts for clarity. Pricelist is likely from 1938 not 1932. The Fishermans Pride knife probably did make it's first appearance in 1936.
