Nice lot of celluloid Schrades, Tongueriver. There are plenty of celluloid handles that I like, and if one is cheap I can be tempted.

Lots of cool old knives.

How do you store your cell knives? I'm afraid they will off-gas and destroy my other safe-queens. I do like their old-school appearance.

Calvin, those all look good, no celluloid break down. The Cracked Ice and Imitation Ivory celluloids seem to be the most stable of all in my experience.
I think that if no signs of deterioration are present after about 75 years, then that piece of celluloid is stable. The worst off gassing i have seen has all occurred in more recently made knives.

Looking at the shield of the 4th knife from the left I would say it is outgassing, also the 6th knife appears to be outgassing from the looks of the shield and bolsters.

In regard to the comment above about 2 of these beautiful knives starting to show signs of outgassing, I definitely see it in the 4th picture, center knife, and 6th picture, top knife. Scales have started to shrink away from the bolsters and corrosion on the metal. The center knife in 4th pic has the telltale corrosion across the top half of the clip in a straight line (the bottom half is protected by being inside the frame when the knife is closed.) Beautiful collection Cal, but the unstable nature of celluloid is a sad, but true fact. I would at least keep those 2 stored separately. Sorry to poop on your parade.

Cal, in the 4th photo there is a dogleg jack with white and blue marbled cell (very pretty color by the way). Does that one have a match strike main?

Celluloid is good looking and old school. I had a. Case that offgassed badly. Had Muskrat Man re handle it to bone. If it’s very old and in good shape it’s not likely to offgas. But mine seemed to start at about 30 years.
