All About Pocket Knives

Happy New Year everyone!!
My first restore of 2020 here.....
When I first got this knife I had no idea what the model number was. But, with the help from the Schrade guys over in the Schrade forum, it was identified as a 2104 3/8M.... the "M" stands for "Marine Pyralin". A fancy name from Schrade for this mix of celluloid.....
SO, I went on the search for something that looked similar to what Schrade used for the scales on this knife. I liked the look so I decided to go for a restoration rather than a mod.
Here is what she looked like when I got her.....

I looked around the web a bit and I found this stuff called "Kyranite" in antique Pearl... I decided I wanted to try it.
Here it is used for pistol grips as shown on their web site.

Well, the slabs I got were thick enough to use as pistol grips so I was able to split one and get 2 pieces thick enough to use for my knife covers. I took her apart and cleaned her up, then got her ready for some new clothes....

I cut the scales to fit, glued and pinned them (man, what a bunch of pins!!) ......

Then, I mocked the knife up so I could start the thinning and sanding process for finishing the covers...
. .
After a LOT of scratch chasing i finally got the covers down to the finish that pleased me. It sure took a while but here her is in her new clothes....
That dog gone deep pitted area is on my last nerve but I am going to over look it.
. .
I think I might go back and finish polishing the blades. Then she goes in my Schrade collection.

Mike it turned out pretty great. Wonderful looking now. Great work and probably a lot of it.

Thanks Dog!... Yep, it was a LOT of work. I did all the finish work with hand tools. I didn't want to heat up the covers with a sander for fear I would burn the acrylic. Lots of filing and then sanding all the way up to 2500 grit paper.
The final result was worth it.

And that stuff really MOVES when you tilt the knife from side to side.

WOW, Kirinite looks a lot better than Mother of Toilet Seat! Every cell knife I have that I plan to get rehandled is planned for either bone or stag, but I think I might get one done up in Kirinite to better match what it originally came with.

Those handles are beautiful!!
The folding hunter is one of my favourite patterns.

Yep, I was impressed with the Kyrinite. It turned out really nice.... And, as far as I know it is a stable material, so gassing worries are done.

Sure does look better in hand Doc..... the handles dance and shine ..... I LIKE that Kyranite stuff..... I want to put some on another knife after seeing the results!

Looking from the edge, you can see the pins going thru into the liners. Pretty transparent base.... I like this stuff!

I like how you kept it as true as possible to it's original look. In my mind it probably looked less yellowed and more like this when it was new. Great job!

Dale showed us a picture of one he has and the color or tone looks a lot like the stuff I used. Maybe it hasn't aged (???).
