Schrade New York 8OT - Sunset Bone

I like the Schrade 8OT's. The size of this knife just seems right to me.
The blades on this one were in decent shape so they were left as found (a little bit gnarly but not heavily pitted) . I installed some new sunset bone slabs from Culpepper then cleaned and polished it all up. I left the slabs a bit on the thicker side, its a big enough knife that the thicker handles work well with it.
The nickel silver used in the Schrade bolsters seems to polish up really nice compared to a few of the other manufacturers.

In your opinion, is the Schrade Swinden key blade pivot method just as strong as a through-the-bolster pivot pin? I haven't seen many loose Shrades, even well-used ones.

If the knife is not abused, I think that the Swinden key system is comparable.
I have re-pinned Case pocket knives (which are through-pinned) where the pin was bent from abuse. Any knife can be damaged if used as a pry-bar.

Great job Jeff!
I have some 8OTs I have been wanting to re-fit with bone handles. That sunset bone sure looks nice!
I agree... the thicker handles look like a good fit.

That is a sweet lookin' knife!
2 thumbs up!!

If the Swinden keys are in good shape when you start then they definitely hold up well for disassembly/reassembly. I don’t see a down side to the system. The pins are a good size and appear to hold up well during use. It’s a cool system for the quick production assembly of knives. I like it.
I’m sure there are some folks who have had issues with it but I personally have not had any issues with Swinden keys.
