..this is the first thing I remember listening to on the radio about WW2!!......I was 7 years old and I remember sitting up late that night and listening to Gabriel Heater and I think it was Walter Cronkite,( I may be wrong about him). we had a big floor model Philco radio with a tall outside antenna and we had several neighbors sitting around the radio listening- we didn't know until the war was over that my uncle was not involved-he was in the South Pacific on the USS WASHINGTON at that time!!!.................

Just a year and a handful of days shy of a year and three months before the war in Europe ended on September 2, 1945. I think we're beginning to forget. It's bound to happen because hardly anyone "Remembers The Maine" these days.

I believe a large majority of troops hitting the beach that day were newbies, i.e. experiencing combat for the first time. A heck of an introduction. The 1st Division (The Big Red I) had experience in the Italian campaign, but certainly had many new replacements for Normandy. And I always reflect, in complete awe, on those Rangers taking Pont du Hoc. What many are unaware of is that after they scaled the cliff they had about another 24 hours of ferocious fighting, having to use the weapons and ammo of dead Germans, hand to hand fighting, etc.
God bless them all.

My brother Jim told me about the end of the war. He was eight, and saw leaflets falling in the street, and finally got one and took it to show Mom. She told him to go where Dad worked to tell him the news. Part way there he met Dad. They had closed the General Electric plant. He said Calhoun Street was full of people celebrating, when they walked downtown that evening.

It was, Charlie. Meanwhile, in almost every big city, people we're gathering en masse and most weren't even wearing some kind of cloth mask. So now you know why things are the way they are.
