All About Pocket Knives

This is a project I've been working on for the past three years. I have a prototype knife my great grandfather, George Schrade, received a patent on in 1937 but never went into production for reasons I can only speculate. He died three years later. My friend Bill DeShivs disassembled the knife and I had it reversed engineered. The blade and kick/back spring are carbon steel like the original with stainless steel liners. Nickel silver bolsters are silver soldered to the liners with jigged bone scales in various patterns. I assemble the knives one at a time using my great grandfathers stiddy and ball peen hammer in my home shop, a dream I've had for a long time. His design, his tools, my hands, our blood.

I just attempted to make this post and thought I had. I will try again. Congratulations on this project. We had discussed it several years ago at the museum. which is when you explained that this knife was found in a roll of grandads knives. in the garage or shed. It was in your book and I had been looking for one for years. No wonder I could not find one. We spoke again about it 2 years ago at the show in Ct. I am glad you completed the project. I am sure that between you and De Shiv it is amazing. You have revived a part of history which had been lost. Please advise when purchase is available. I do not post much I seem to cause to much controversy. However I felt compelled to congratulate you on completion of a family dream. George would be proud. Proving again that his greatest attribute was his mind and family. I hope you and the family are staying well. You should have my tel and email so please let me know when I can acquire an example. Beautiful work Bill! What is the patent number? I’d like to look up the patent and view the mechanism. Alternatively, if you have the patent as a PDF perhaps you could post it.

In Bills book George Schrade and his accomplishments there is a picture of the original prototype knife Page 26. Below it reads4,1/8" closed clip blade. One piece steel lining and bolsters, jiggers (I believe it should be jigged ) bone handle, pull ball release Pat on page 65 . Pat number on that page is 2,098,678. dated Patented Nov 9 1937.
