All About Pocket Knives

The Schrade LUNA is a concept multi tool ‘plus’ in the same order as the Navitool/I-Quip products. The idea and prototype came about in 2003 and no progress was made beyond that early stage. It doesn’t seem likely this one was headed to production regardless of the closure. The LUNA features a molded plastic body that holds a blade pod filled with Tough Tool implements on one side complemented by a watertight flashlight on the other. The LED flashlight is positioned to cast light on the object being engaged by the tool but a large plastic nut on the bottom of LUNA releases the flashlight to allow it to be used by itself when tools aren’t needed.

LUNA weighs in at a solid 4.9 ounces (5.7 ounces with three AAA batteries installed) and measures 3-7/8” by 1-7/8” by 1-1/8”. Without the flashlight the length is 3-1/4”.

The prototype was actually 3D printed along with a small cadre of spare parts – unfortunately, there aren’t enough parts to build a second LUNA. The prototype and parts are joined by a notebook filled with technical sketches and notes. There’s even a sketch of a potential product logo and finished product computer images.

Sure did! It's staring back at me from a shelf above my desk right now.

Schrade collectors know that there always will be another Schrade knife that you never heard of before. But this is really neat. Schrade closed for 16 years and there is still a new product coming to light.

That is awesome Jason. A great piece of history uncovered long after the closure, I would be proud to have that in my collection along with the notes,drawings and computer photos.

I believe there are more like this out there, however, I also believe they are in the hands of family members of former employees that have passed and the family members have no idea what they have. Its a shame because these nuggets of Schrade history will be lost. It has been my thought to preserve as much of the Schrade history as possible becayse it is also a large part of my family history!

Thanks to all who came to say Hi to LUNA. I think she's pretty special. The notebook has about 20 pages of technical drawings - all in a language I can't even pretend to understand. There is also a manila folder jam-packed with sketches - some computer generated but a lot of it is freehand. I know all of the components to LUNA were 3D printed and coincidentally I had a lesson in how all that works just this morning because of a project I'm working on. So now I know it would be pretty easy to recreate the missing pieces using the completed LUNA and put together a second one. Or third, fourth, etc.
So today's moral quandaray is about whether to leave it be or create some users. I'll update here when I figure that out.
