All About Pocket Knives

If any of you are familiar with Paul Long he is a tremendous leatherworker from Texas and he specializes in sheaths. I had purchased his video series which show his methods and it helped tremendously. Anyway one of the series focuses on small pouch sheaths for pocket knives. So I decided to give it a whirl.

This case knife is one I bought years ago. I usually carry it when I'm more dressed up. As opposed to my normal daily t shirt and Jeans. Since it had the snake pattern scales I added snake skin onto this pocket sheath. I also got fancy with a red liner just cause. Some simple geometric tooling. I got off a bit but looks alright. Since it's just for me I'll live with it.

Anyway open to thoughts and improvements.

Zane found some 1800s type studs. This was a prototype ball ammo pouch. Looking at pictures of the originals I have concerns about the leather tearing at the stud but this won't be an everyday use item so I like it in this application.

I have something very similar, trust me the leather will not tear. It will be able to stand heavy use.

This is the leather pouch i was talking about. I use it all the time, it will outlast me.

I suspect it wont be much of a problem. Unless the leather is dry rotting. If you look at the pic cudgee posted you will see a hole and a slit that goes over the stud. That's what I have seen before. On the ammo pouch looks like just a hole? But its also thicker leather
Just wondering if the hole.lossen will it stay on the stud?

It is designed as a belt pouch for stockman to carry a watch in it to protect the watch from damage while working. But i use it to carry coins in usually when wearing shorts or track pants that don't have a fob pocket.

I have seen these type of pouches that have been used for decades, a lot of my family had them when i was a kid, never saw one where the hole in the leather got torn or wore that much that it would not stay on the clip. These pouches are made to be used everyday, good ones never fail. The picture of the one i posted is from a quality leather maker and will never wear out, not in my lifetime anyway. Hope this helps.

Yep.for sure cudgee. The one thankgod4rkids posted just has a hole that slips over the stud. That's the one makes me wonder if it will not stay on in time. The way yours is made with the slit they seem to last.

One of the great things about forums and such is we can share ideas and Info and in so learn what works the best. Always appreciate the thoughts and comments it's how we all get better. Thanks

Still should not be a problem, on close inspection the stud has a smooth but flattened top to it, this should stop the leather flap from not staying in place. It is good quality work, i can tell from the image posted, they always last, you cannot beat " Quality ".

That watch pouch is very neat. What a great idea. I’ve never seen such in this side of the pond. I’m assuming you’d wear that on your belt?

Yes, it is to protect the watch from dust, rain, scratching and just being damaged while been worn while working. It just slides onto any belt size.

I found some US Calvary pouches that the stud is underneath. I think this might help against accidental opening. I agree the idea sharing is priceless.

Great post and even better find. I love it, the older leather gets the better it gets. . The idea sharing, is why this joint is priceless.

Really liking this post about leather pouches and slips. Would love to hear what everyone uses to treat and condition their leather products. A lot of very experienced and knowledgeable people on the forum. I am posting the products that i use, the large yellow bottle has been manufactured here for over 100 years, they must be doing something right to have lasted that long.

I tried everything and anything. I have a 40 year old belt that has had only neatsfoot oil. Not the greatest finish but the leather has lasted. This knife sheath from my wife's uncle was treated with 100% beeswax heated to soak in. Then polished. I've only reapplied once at about 10 years. Its been about 10 again but I haven't been deer hunting in a long time so it hasn't been out. I'm pretty much a natural leather fan these days so glycerin saddle soap on some things.

I also have used many different products. I seem to gravitate towards saddle soap for cleaning and polishing. I also like pecards as a general protectant.

I've used snow proof leather conditioner, neats foot oil(tends to darken the leather imo). Beeswax, beeswax and neatsfoot oil mixed. And lots of other products over the years.

Everyone seems to have a favorite and the important thing is you keep your leather oiled so it doesnt dry out or dry rot.

You are so correct. If you look after leather it will last a lifetime. And everyone does have their own methods, and i am of the old opinion, as long as it works for you.

I used to use a mink oil based snow proof and really liked it. Haven't seen it around for a while. I have boots and belts that are 25 to 35 years old. I'm getting concerned though all the boot/shoe repair shops are closing up around here. Nobody to take over the business and I think business is down because the younger generation doesn't think of shoes and leather goods lasting for decades.
