All About Pocket Knives

I've recently experienced a lot of memory loss. I just managed to find a way to hide a great portion of my meager knife collection, which includes my favorite Case Cheetah/Cheetah Cub, pairs. My wife and I have spent several hours a day, for several days looking through our three bedroom house, and have not found those favorite Case knives, and today, after many hours searching, I've finally given up ever finding them completely. Can anyone top that?

Sut, I’m sorry for the loss. Just a thought, sometimes we think something is lost and instead it’s been stolen. That’s happened to me. Knives are easy things for a thief to steal. My experience was with a family member who is a drug addict. You might rethink who has been around since you saw them last.

Sut - this may not top your story, but here is mine. About a decade ago I bought a new National Geographic Bird Guide, along with a shoulder carry pouch. At some point I put the pouch and book away. I distinctly remember thinking: I hope I do not forget where I put this. To this day I have not seen that book or pouch since then. Like you, I have looked everywhere I would possibly have put it...except where it is.

Sending good thoughts your way, Sut. When I can't find something I am searching for, it drives me absolutely crazy! In my case, that's a relatively short trip. Say a prayer to St. Anthony, the patron saint of those who have lost something.

Here is hoping you do finally locate your knives my friend. I do not think that a day goes by that I am not tearing the house apart looking for a knife or something equally valuable(intrinsically anyway).I have spent DAYS looking for a particular item in vain only to stumble across it months later when I'm not looking for it! Sadly both myself and my bride are beginning to suffer from the same malady:"cantrememberexcrementitis"

Ten years ago, in 2010 i put my just arrived Jerry Halfrich "Small Woodsman" folding knife away somewhere out of sight but easy to get should i want to carry it. I remember telling myself 'if you forget where you put it, just know it is inside the house'; i.e. i did not pocket it and go outside.
I paid Jerry $625 for this knife and i have looked everywhere and still, 10 years later, have a look for it in some odd place every few daze.

About five years ago I had just bought a new knife roll to replace my old one.
I put some of my best knives in it and put it in my bottom desk drawer.
A few weeks later I went to wipe them down and they were gone.
I turned the house upside down looking but never found them.
Six months later I went to get a stamp from you the desk and noticed the drawer wouldn't close all the way.
I pulled the drawer out and there was the knife roll.

Yep. Been bit by that dog, more often than I'd like to recall. We call it Old Timers Disease. Of course, that doesn't help you find your knife.

Usually when I stop looking for something I've misplaced is about the time I find it.

I find that when I hide something , I'm Just hiding it from myself.

If I ever want to find something, I go buy a new one.
The one I was looking for inevitably shows up a day or two later.

Long story short...

I thought that I lost my EDC Case Mini-trapper that I had rehandled with Stag.

Was about 2 years when my wife came out to the garage and said "Look what was in the bathroom closet "

I thought that I would never see the knife again!

I searched high and low for almost 2 years.

I just about fell off my chair

Here she is...

Back taking a ride in my pocket once again!

About two or three years ago, I lost my Boker USA 9229 Electrician's Knife. It's hard to replace for two reasons--it's a real USA 9229; not one Boker cobbled with old USA and new German parts in the late '80s early '90s; and secondly, it was my great-uncle's. I replaced it with one of those officially "cobbled" knives and it was a POS.

I've looked through every coat I own, I've looked through all of the furniture it could have gotten laid down in (I occasionally find knives in the space between the back of a piece of furniture and the back of the drawer). Still can't find the danged thing. Probably in some odd place I've never thought to look.

Lots of 'prodigal' knives that have disappeared, misplaced, taken a walk, forgotten where they are, etc., etc. Been there, done that...recovered some. I hope everyone who has lost one of their beloved knives will eventually find them. Blessings to those who have had their lost one found or recovered. It's a GREAT feeling of joy when one is found and placed back into the fold.

Sut...I truly hope your knives will be recovered and/or found. I understand the emotional anguish you must be experiencing.

Had/have a Rada paring knife that was a gift from (I think) Scott. Great little paring knife. As sharp as the dickens. Went to use it one day and it was nowhere to be seen. Hunted all over the place. Places I would have used it, Places I wouldn't have used it. No joy. Went without for a few months (I have plenty of kitchen knives but I'm stubborn). Finally broke down and bought two in case I lose one. Going on a year later, I walked into the back bedroom (where I had been MANY times) for some reason looked down at the chest of drawers and you guessed it. There lay the missing Rada, right out there in plain sight. -sigh- I would blame it on old age but I've done something similar more times than I care to remember back when I wore a younger man's clothes. -bigger sigh-

In the early 1980s I would go to the annual Knife Expo in Pasadena Ca.
A friend from work would pick me up and we would go together.
One year, as we were on the way to the show, he handed me a vintage "Eveready" flashlight and asked me to open it. I did, inside was 15 $20.00 bills.
He said that while he was cleaning out his garage over the last weekend he found it, opened it up and discovered the $300.00. He remembers losing the money many years ago, searched everywhere, no luck. As the years went by he forgot about it.
He does not remember why he would put $300.00 in a empty flashlight.
He did have a good time acquiring additionally knives at the show.

To be looking for something that is known to be misplaced or lost is frustrating.

It is absolutely maddening to be looking for something that you KNOW you put somewhere safe.

I recently bought a new multimeter because the old one disappeared.

Then I put that one safely away. Only to be unable to find the new multimeter when I needed it.

So I had to go buy a 3rd multimeter. I absolutely will NOT forget where I put the 3rd one - It sitting on one of the shelves in my medicine cabinet in the bathroom. I see the dang thing every morning when I take my BP pill.

Sometimes missing item are just on vacation...

A knife that was thought lost to posterity a long time ago but eventually turned up again was the second knife that I thought I had lost. It was a replacement for a knife lost in the river... a Kutmaster 2 blade Pioneer Seed Company advertising knife that my father gave me after I lost the peanut in the river.

In 1969, the knife went missing. 27 years later, in 1996 my parents were getting rid of an old sofa bed. When we opened it and took the mattress out to lessen the weight, that little Pioneer fell out. I still have it in a drawer somewhere.
