RECALL NOTICE

Posted: Thu Oct 15, 2020 3:00 pm
by Quick Steel
The FDA has issued a dog food recall that affects more than a dozen brand names over concerns they could contain unsafe levels of aflatoxin.

Sunshine Mills announced a recall in early September on six different types of dog food after a product sample was found by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry to contain an unsafe level of aflatoxin. Now, the recall has been expanded to additional kinds of dog food within specific lot codes. This recall includes specific lot codes from foods like Whiskers & Tails Adult Recipe Complete Dog Food, Old Glory Hearty Beef & Chicken Flavor Dog Food, and Paws Happy Life Nutritionally Complete Dog Food. You can find full lot codes and product names in the full recall notice

Man I hate it when stuff like this happens. I remember some years ago they were recalling dog food from some of the well known brands that was sourced from China. I now only buy kibble that has ingredients sourced in the USA.

I recognize a couple of those brands - think I saw them at Walmart. I’ve fed my dogs Victor brand dog food for years. Not the cheapest but it’s quality dog food. If you can get it where you live I recommend it. https://victorpetfood.com/news

I read an article that said there are only 4 manufacturers of dog food in USA. Where they get their ingredients is important. Likely China is a supplier to some. Wonder how well screened ingredients are for contaminants ?

I personally know of two dog food makers whose manufacturing facilities are located within 100 miles of my home. The aforementioned Victor Pet Food located in Mount Pleasant, TX, and Muenster Milling, located in Muenster, TX. https://muenstermilling.com/ Based on that I’d guess there are far more than 4 manufacturers of dog food in the USA. Those two located near me state clearly on their web sites that they obtain their ingredients from local sources, mostly area farmers and ranchers.

Ken--there is also two within 40/50 miles of my house... they're a cheaper, grain based dog food..not sure where they source ALL of their raw materials from...

Tuffy/NutriSource is headquartered in Perham Minnesota as are their mills. Cargill/Nutrena are also U.S. mills with local ingredients. Purina's main dogfood plant is in Denver CO.

We have one of those near too Ryan. Our Malamutes and Huskys don't do well on grain based. We feed grain free. Nutrena since I'm a dealer. Dog food is big business. I attended several seminars when we were still actively breeding dogs. The better companies have outstanding nutritionists. I can't imagine the quality controls that need to be in place to produce meat based pet foods safely. But I agree with Ken there are alot of manufactures. Alot of cheap start ups because the mark up is so high compared to other livestock feeds.

Found this on YouTube. Short film, but note the part about raw materials being sourced locally. I can also vouch for the nutritional value relationship to cost. I feed my Labrador retrievers 2 scant cups a day each of the Victor Senior formula (I use a measuring cup), and they stay in great condition. Some so-called less expensive kibbles recommend 3 to 4 cups a day. You may think it’s cheaper because a bag of it costs less. But if you have to feed half-again to twice the amount what’s the actual cost?

Also the problem with toxins in grain such as aflotoxin and micotoxin is they can concentrate in just one part of the processed grain. For example we had a toxin problem in our area a few years ago. A great deal of our corn is processed in the ethanol plants and we feed distilled grains both wet and dried to our livestock. Beef or swine probably wouldn't have been to bothered by the toxins in the raw grains but it was concentrated exponentially in the Distillers Grains. So every load of corn has to be tested for toxins before unloading at a plant producing byproducts for livestock feeds.

Ken--I wholeheartedly agree.. I've fed layla nothing but 4health grain free food since she was a puppy..she also gets one krill oil pill a day and once a week a tablespoon of brewer's yeast powder on her food.. people always comment on how she has "hair, not fur" ..her coat is soft and she never has skin problems...I also brush her out several times a week...

The article that stated only 4 manufacturers of dog food in USA claimed that there was a lot of false advertising, that some of the pet food 'manufacturers' were just packaging the food they purchased in bulk from one of the 4 actual pet food manufacturers. Because of the large profit margin in the pet food market the claim was that it had attracted unscrupulous business people who made a lot of false statements about their products. "Locally sourced" can mean only 1% of ingredients etc.
Problem is there is no way for the average person to know how accurate reports posted on the internet are. I read this a some years ago so things might have changed somewhat.
I do know that cancer and many other serious health issues are very common in dogs and some knowledgeable people believe it has to do with what they are fed.

I doubt they export to Germany, Tom. It’s not a real big company. But I did see that it’s now available at Tractor Supply so they must be expanding. I get it from the local feed store.

Can you cite your source? I’ve seen the manufacturing operations of the companies I mentioned. They’re real. ::nod::

I cannot recall the source. I recall what i read because it was a total surprise.
In the last few years in Canada there have been a few 'smaller' dog food operations open up. I was buying from one located in Alberta that got lamb, beef, chicken and turkey 'parts' from organic farmers in the area. But many dog owners here buy large bags of regular 'commercial' dog food from Wal Mart because it is cheaper.

Bill--I switched my springer spaniels to grain free 10 years ago and their on again/off again skin problems went away..ever since I've fed my dogs grain free kibble.. I used to buy really expensive grain-free until a couple of my friends turned me on to 4health from tractor supply.. it's relatively inexpensive compared to other grain-free brands and it gets high ratings from several dog food advisor websites that I joined at one time to try to figure this whole dog food thing out!! 4health comes in four or five different "flavors" grain-free..

I know of 3 dog food manufacturers less than 100 miles of me.Used to sell corn to 2 of them, but they have cut back on using as much corn as they used to.
