All About Pocket Knives

Hello friends,

Found a pretty good looking eye brad knife that is up for auction over here but I'm not sure if it's ok or a counterfeit knife. It has to do with the nail nicks. 3 of one kind, 1 of another kind. That's what caught my eye. Thought I'd post it and ask for your thoughts before I decide if I want to bid on it. It does have nice looking scales and might still be a good EDC.

For comparison, I found another one "just like it".

I'll post the pictures of the knife in question along with this first post.

Then I'll post the pictures of the knife thats "just like it" for comparison in the second post.


If anyone has any ideas for why the knife in question looks ok or why it looks not ok, feel free to share.
Could it be a knife that was rebuilt or repaired? Could it be a factory misstake? Could there be any other explanation I'm not thinking of? Or is it just plain a counterfeit?

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a counterfeit Eye Brand, especially a newer production one. Why would anyone bother? They’re nice knives, but I doubt there’s enough money in counterfeiting one.

I don't know Ken. Just see no reason for different types of nail nicks. Or have you seen that before?

No but there’s a lot I haven’t seen. I still have to ask, why would anyone bother? Not sure who makes Eye Brand nowadays (probably Olbertz?), but they’re German, made in Solingen, so if you can determine who it is maybe you can contact them, or get access to a catalog.

Why would anyone bother to couterfeit any knife worth less than $200 or $300 is beyond me but it does happen. If it happens with other brands, why not this one?

Good idea with the catalog but it won't be of any help before tomarrow.

Tom my friend, those are two good lookin' German Eyes.
I wouldn't have any issue owning either of em', probably different years of manufacture. Tang stamps will tell the complete story, I'll blow up the pics, and give you my definite opinion (like that even matters ).

I am not very well advised with newer knives and the match striker pull on a Eye Brand congress is a new one on me. The second posted knife blade etch (wood grain background) is the old etch on a newer knife so if that's what they are doing now I can't say that I like it. Is the same etch on the matchstriker OP knife?

I've never been a fan of using old stamps or etches for that matter on newer production knives. I think it just adds to the confusion for many trying to figure out if it is an old or a new knife.

What confusses me is the fact that on the knife in question, it has two sorts of nail nicks on the same knife.
This picture shows a "normal" nail nick on the main blade while the secondary has the "match strike" typ nail nick, as does the other two secondary blades.

I looked around on the Web site Ken posted a link of and they did make knives with both types of nail nicks but I have never seen any knives with two sorts of nail nicks on the same knife. The Web site Ken posted has not been updated for many years but it said that their knives were hand made in small runs or batches of about 60 knives. Maybe it was an end of the run knife and they were missing a main blade so somebody just improvised. Who knows? Ken is probably right. Why would anyone bother to couterfeit a knife like this? Don't make much sense. Somebody improvising to get the knife finished could make sense.

Anyways, everyone says it looks good, I think it looks good, so I'll see, if I can get it for a fair price, (1/2 price) then I'll either have a good looking fake or quirky individual. And if I don't get it for 1/2 price, I'll just let it go. Got my eyes on a couple of other Sweethearts as well. We will know this evening.

Never heard of a counterfit EYB, so that should put your worries to rest Tom.
Because of it's quirks, I would value it 10%-15% above the regular congress of that era. Normally they run for $90-$100, so if you can snag it at $60, would be a great deal. Good luck!

I had it and got overbid in the last seconds of the auction. That's usually my hat trick.
