Got myself a small grinder to sharpen knives. Just kidding.
I would not do that!! Anyway I saw this little grinder at
a resale shop for cheap. I always wanted a small grinder
(although not sure what I am going to do with it)

I have looked on Google and YouTube for some general
instructions on how to use a grinder and have not found
anything that is fantastic. I even looked to see if I can
download a free instruction sheet that comes with grinders so
I can learn how to use it. I know any power tool can be
dangerous. I don't want to loose any eye or fingers.
Does anyone know of any websites so I can learn?

Also, the previous owner put a drill chuck ( I think that is what
it is called) on the right side. The right side axle does
not take the same bolt that is on left side now. Is there
a reverse bolt (left handed? ) for the other side?
Both the left and right axles seem to be the same diameter
and thread length.

Good morning. As for the direction of the threads ,one end should be reverse and depends on rotation of grinder . That drill chuck on a grinder is different! U could put a round buffer like we use in drill press for buffing . Have fun ,be safe.

Great find! Just be careful, buffer and grinders can be the most dangerous tools in the shop. Especially when they grab your project and fling it around at supersonic speed. Most buffers work best in the 1800rpm range. However, I used to use a standard grinder as my buffer, so it can be done, just be mindful.

More than likely it originally had a grinding wheel on the right side where the drill chuck is now. To go back to the original configuration, you would need a nut and 2 cup washers as shown. The drill chuck is most likely 1/2" x 20 TPI to thread directly onto the shaft of the grinder. Another option would be to use a mandrel to mount accessories on like the buffing wheel shown. The drill chuck would grip the shaft of the mandrel. However as others have pointed out, the info on the motor states 3500 RPM, which is too fast to be safe for many accessories. Also the drill chuck with the mandrel and buffing wheel would extend out beyond the housing of the grinder and would tend to throw debris all over. I think if it was mine I would revert back to an original configuration with a grinding wheel mounted between cup washers and a correctly threaded nut. The nut used on the right hand side would have to be right hand thread, and the left hand side left hand thread.

Does a grinding wheel rotate towards the front, so that if it grabs what you are grinding it would fling it downward ?
What is a grinder good for in a home workshop ? fixing edge on garden tools, like spade or shovel, but what else ?

I have a slow speed grinder that I use to profile my woodworking chisels before they are put on a stone for final sharpening.
It's 1120 RPM.
If you are doing any work at all a grinder will come in handy at some point.
The drill chuck, while a bit odd, may have been used to do some small parts lathe work. Again, a bit odd.

Genders are very handy tools for sharpening, cleaning up metal parts, shaping, deburring, etc... Depending on what kind of wheel you’re using the possibilities are endless.

I just got hold of 4 1750 rpm 1/4 hp motors. I’m going to use one to make a small grinder.

I have a 1750 rpm buffer i bought from a jeweler but i have never used it. I don't like shiny knives.

I’ve never used a wheel grinder on a knife. Or a buffer either. But I use a grinder all the time in the shoo.

Thanks for the detailed information. I will go to one of the big box hardware stores on Thur. to get a left handed thread ( no
Mom & Pop stores here). I have a grinding stone that should fit. Maybe it will come in handy some day.
