All About Pocket Knives

Hi all, I have a nice pre 1911 MARBLES GLADSTONE MICH. U.S.A. stamped folder. Overall length open 9 and 1/8", the blade length is 4 and 3/4" with the handle measuring 4 and 3/8". The handle has nice stag scales, w/ nickle silver bolsters and measures 1/2" thick by over an inch wide. Missing guard. I am looking for additional information.

What makes you think this is a pre-1911 Marble's? Arni Dunathan wrote the book on Marble's outdoor gear, including all of the offered knives they made. Your's is the smaller version of the folding Safety Hunder. Side note, the nickel-silver guard is missing, that's why there's a hole by the tang stamp. to AAPK!

In 1911 Marbles name changed to MARBLES ARMES and MANUFACTURING COMP.. The stamp on the blade is MARBLES GLADESTONE MICH. U.S.A. , to the best of my information, this was their original stamp. I am aware the guard is missing. This knife was purchased by my ggfather in Montana. Please provide all the info you have, as I am no expert. Never mind the selling I will go elsewhere, later.

You have the larger version of the stag handle safety folder. It is not pre 1911 but rather made sometime between 1935 and WWII. The blade looks to have been repinned at some point in time and it over extends when fully open. These facts including the missing guard will lower the value. Still a nice old desireable knife. I only see one side of the handle in the pictures but the side shown looks nice.

Thanks for the information on the age. The first two pics show both sides of the knife, yes it is a nice old piece. About the blade repinning, dont know. One post says its a smaller version another post says it's a larger version, not sure I can accept the validity of the info, inconsistent.

Can someone please post some picks of the various blade stamps and their dates of use.

I can post some pics from the Dunathan book when I get home. Going to measure mine up too, I could swear my large SFH is over 5" or there abouts. I thought they were 4 1/2" small and 5" large not including the blade guard.

4 1/4" small or 5" large, from Dunathan's book, values (subject to market trends) and some tang stamps. Hope this sheds some light on the subject.

Pocket sheaths are a whole other ball of wax.

Hi thanks to 1967redrider I stand corrected on my Marbles folder, it has 5 pins in the scales which started in 1935. I am not happy that family history was wrong but it's nice to know the facts, that all I wanted. I will be putting it up for sale. Pictures available on demand. Contact me at [email protected] . The small stag folders have a straight sided frame and the stag large folders have more of a coke bottle shaped frame. Your knife is definitly the larger version. You don't need a ruler to tell them apart from each other.
