Do y’all think I should work the scratches out of the blade on this knife. I like the patina, not crazy about the way it looks as is. Harold

I say just get a good edge on it and put it to use. Getting deep scratches out of a blade makes it thinner.

Personally I would clean it up. I don’t like lines like that either on the blade. It looks like it needs a good sharpening too.

Personally, I like the old rustic blade, with an old rustic handle. Looks like it's been rehandled on one side? I don't think it would hurt the value to clean it up.

If you work the scratches out and its carbon steel I'm guessing. You can bring the patina back by covering in some mustard for a bit then washing off.

Thinning the blade though is a concern imo too

What makes you think it has been rehandled?

If it was me, i would just sharpen it and carry it. Love the character and story it tells.

It does not appear to me to have been rehandled.

Real nice knife. I would just clean off any loose dirt/gunk, give it a good, sharp edge and carry. My personal favorite is WD-40 and 0000 steel wool for cleaning and WD inside the blade well if there if gunk in there. Maybe, it you want it to look real pretty, patch that little chip on the bare head end on the pile side.

Does one side look like saw cut bone and the other not have the saw cut pattern?

Hey Doc, I had noticed the bone looks saw cut on one side and smooth on the other. I don’t think it has ever been apart. I’ve had the old knife only a year or so. I usually don’t clean much, just thought it might be fun. Harold

I think the use and wear on the blade go with the use and wear on the rest of the knife. For me personally, I think it would look weird with a shiny blade. However, as was mentioned, you could clean up the blade and then patina it after.

Great looking knife, I hate when people sharpen like this. My dad sharpens like this, he thinks he has to thin the blade to get it to cut right.

I used to love a polished blade, but the more old knives that I have owned have given me an appreciation for a patina, even on a blade with scratches.
I don't love 'em, but I like the scratches better than a thinned, over-polished blade.
I would probably do nothing more than sharpen and carry that knife if it were mine.

I told a friend I was going to clean it, he wanted to clean it for me. So I sent it home with him. This is the D-E after he was finished. Looks fine to me. I think I will carry it and put it to work.

He also replaced missing pin on mark side at top and patched pile side bone at bottom pin, small little piece.
